In a decisive move, the United States has officially designated the actions of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Darfur as genocide. Secretary of State Antony Blinken highlighted the RSF’s systematic atrocities, including ethnically targeted killings and sexual violence, as the basis for this determination. Consequently, the Treasury Department has imposed sanctions on RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti, citing his leadership over these egregious human rights violations.
Further extending its punitive measures, the U.S. has sanctioned seven RSF-affiliated companies based in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for their roles in procuring weapons for the paramilitary group. This action underscores the complex international dimensions of the Sudanese conflict, with the UAE previously accused of covertly arming the RSF—a claim it denies, asserting its involvement is solely humanitarian. The ongoing civil war, ignited in April 2023 between the RSF and Sudanese Armed Forces, has precipitated a dire humanitarian crisis, with millions displaced and widespread famine reported.
UAE is problematic. Saudi Arabia too.
Who sanctions the USA and Israel when they commit crimes against humanity and genocide?
