  1. This is why I have a problem going to France…. Ok. I just about got used to the fact that this exists, but then it is different depending on where you are. Or worse still, who is from where.

it’s always 3 in the netherlands, never ever seen more than 2 in France

I always have a slight dislike for these maps that show Québec as a monolithic representative of Canadiens in general. French Canadians are scattered all across the country with the Québecois just being the largest group, while large parts of Québec are inhabited by Anglophone and indigenous peoples.

A hash over multiple regions of Canada with solid colours in southern Québec would be much better.

As a Brazilian, I’d like to know how this map was made. I feel like everything on this map at least about Brazil is totally made up. I mean, I didn’t even know that there were a different number of kisses in different states. Also I don’t think that cheek kissing is as common in Brazil as this map makes it look, and I think that there’s regions where this just isn’t a common practice at all

  5. As a Russian, barely seen any in my lifetime. It’s something from very long ago and only among family members/close friends.

I remember one time coming back from a summer with family in Bolivia… My Irish-American uncle came over to say hi to my dad. My brother greeted him with a hug and a kiss. My uncle responded “that’s….. Very European” 😂

    (If this map is accurate)

It’s interesting to me how this custom shifted when going from a home country to their colonies. Spain uses 2 kisses yet all of their former colonies only use 1. Anybody know why this kind of shift happens? It’s surprising that no former Spanish colony uses the same custom as Spain.

  8. I’m glad to see the NY area represented here. It’s very common there in my experience.

It’s also interesting that the Belize, Jamaica, and Guyana all do not cheek kiss, as they were all British colonies.

It just shows how deep rooted colonial customs and traditions are even years after independence.

  10. I am used to giving two kisses on the cheek.
Usually guys only give them to girls, but also to men in close family. It is also common among girls.

I remember some French guys giving 3 to my girlfriends and there was always uncoordination in that “extra” kiss.

Don’t they know that cheek kissing is unhygienic? We shouldn’t do this anymore. A simple handshake is enough, although I prefer the Japanese custom of bowing so we won’t have any any physical contact. If that Japanese custom is too Asian for white people to adopt, maybe we should bring the Roman salute back. Too bad that’s considered unconstitutional in Germany, but maybe that can be changed.

  12. Luxembourg is definitely 3, and I have family from the Quimper region and I’m pretty sure they kiss two times.
There’s also a one kiss alternative for rich people in Lisbon/Cascais, but I guess that’s very specific and not that much representative of the majority of the population.

  13. Quebec should be a grey and pink hash.

Honestly I don’t even know how many I give, when I do. Probably two.

As an American with my whole family being Portuguese, I kinda only do the kiss thing with the female adults. With anybody else it feels weird. I know some countries do that with everybody like males on males. I find that kinda crazy.
