  1. A Nasa spacecraft is attempting to travel closer to the Sun than ever before in a Christmas Eve mission that will see temperatures reach 1,400°C.

The Parker Solar Probe is trying to make its closest-ever approach to the Sun as it enters its outer atmosphere at the fastest human-made speed ever recorded.

Racing past the star at speeds of 435,000mph, the unmanned probe will be travelling fast enough to go from London to New York in 29 seconds.

Pulled by immense gravitational forces, it will travel 3.8 million miles from the Sun as it passes through the corona, the outer atmosphere visible during a total solar eclipse.

Temperatures at the front of the spacecraft are expected to reach 1,400°C, with the probe enduring radiation that could short circuit its electronics.

Nasa scientists won’t know if the craft has survived the mission until it signals back to them on 27 December, and hope it will continue circling the Sun at close to the record distance until at least September.
