Why do the Falklands belong to the UK and not Argentina?
Just to rile them up even more.
Google is a useful tool my friend.
because they wanted it more
At that southernmost tip, Chile wanted the strait. Everything else Chile’s politicians at the time thought was barren wasteland (low economic value) and let it be.
Your first map picture is leaving out where the shipping strait is.
They didn’t want to become the 51st U.S. state! I’m just saying.
Oh wait … did you say Chile? Chile … Sovereignty relinquished to keep the peace perhaps?
Honestly the question should be: why is so much of Tierra del Fuego a part of Chile and not Argentina?
How could the translate cabo de hornos to cape horn?
The OP conveniently ignores that 61% of Tierra del Fuego is actually Chilean. ¡Plop!
Someone hasn’t seen Top Gear’s Patagonia special. If you did you would hear Jeremy Clarkson‘s incredibly politically correct and historically accurate explanation… And then you would see them pelted with rocks and expelled from the country.
It’s actually split. The Chilean side is more remote and inaccessible while the Argentine side is more populated. I believe Chile was ahead of the Argentines in settling the south and already had settlements before they did. This led to them controlling the Strait of Magellan which would require their half of Tierra del Fuego.
Because Selk-Nam
Chile would be too long otherwise. Can’t have countries that long. Gotta put a stop to it somewhere. Terminal longitude is the scientific term that I just invented.
