It seems that 38 states have legalised some form of sports related gambling initiatives, in hopes of generating significant tax revenue.
Unfortunately, state sponsored anti-gambling programs – in order to combat this growing scourge (I name him Gamblor, and we must wrest victory from his neon claws) – have lagged far behind.
For comparison, substance abuse is 7x greater than gambling addiction; however, approximately 338x the amount is spent on those programs versus similarly targeted anti-gambling initiatives.
I suspect that the gambling industry will already have Trump in their pocket, or will soon.
I am no fan of the gambling industry but doubt that the Republican Party is the one to tackle the problem.
Gosh who would have thought?
Yes, Congress, gambling is a much bigger issue than guns…morons
Next could you really tackle other key issues? Please ignore homelessness and the wealth gap, but it is long past the time for congressional action on the mattress tag issue. Get to work!
Maybe if everything didn’t cost a fortune and out of reach like housing, rent, healthcare dept, and soon groceries. “Some” people wouldn’t bet to prey for that jackpot like their lives depended on it.
This is the first year I’ve seen ads for state run online scratch tickets that you can buy on your phone with a credit card.
I can’t imagine a more damaging thing for a gambling addict.
For starters these gambling books should not be allowed to advertise let alone be in our faces nonstop
1638- The Puritans of Massachusetts enacted America’s first law against gambling is no longer valid?
I’m grateful to not like gambling because the past decade is the type of climate that ruins people with addictions.
For every bet you make, the online casinos take in 5% on average. For every Parlay you make, they make 5% per parlay, so a 6 way Parlay, the online casinos are making 30% profit on each bet.
Listen to Against the Rules podcast with Michael Lewis. It’s a shockingly dishonest industry. Another fun fact, if you win consistently, they stop taking your bets. They only take the bets of losers.
Every other ad I see is for Fan Duel. A year ago, I didn’t know what it was and now I literally can’t escape it. Start cracking down there.
You know what is a serious disease? Pediatric Cancer.
“I’m shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!”
>“Your winnings, sir.”
“Oh, thank you very much.”
They’re just upset they can’t control people making money
Please I’m so tierd of seeing all the sports gambling adds and I think it cheapens sports as a whole.
The war on gambling… yep… that’ll be SUPER effective! Congress hurt itself in its confusion.
In the future we will see sports betting like cigarettes.
2-to-1 it doesn’t happen.
I do enjoy sports betting. Makes it a little more fun to watch. However, my monthly amount I can wager is built into my entertainment section of my personal budget and I stick to it. Unfortunately many people can not and think they can ‘make a living’ doing it. Many people can’t control themselves. At the very least the books shouldn’t be advertising on tv. The books heavily push parlays which account for the overwhelming majority of their profits.
Theyll huff and puff until the gambling lobbyists or maybe Miriam Adelson/steve Wynn tell them to stop considering legislation
Anyone wanna bet they don’t do shit about it?
