Hello, Redditors. Farah Stockman and David French here! We have been offering commentary on Donald Trump’s intended [nominees](https://www.nytimes.com/2024/11/25/opinion/republicans-freak-out-over-trumps-choice-for-labor-secretary.html) and [appointees](https://www.nytimes.com/live/2024/12/04/opinion/thepoint/patel-trump-fbi-loyalty?smid=url-share) for his second-term cabinet, along with discussing foreign policy issues in Ukraine, Taiwan and [Korea](https://www.nytimes.com/2024/12/05/opinion/trump-south-korea-martial-law.html).

From Farah: I joined The New York Times editorial board in 2020 after covering politics, social movements and race for the national desk. I’ve filed stories from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, South Sudan, Rwanda and Guantánamo Bay. Previously, I spent 16 years at the Boston Globe as a columnist and editorial board member, where I won a Pulitzer Prize for commentary in 2016. I’m the author of the book “American Made: What Happens to People When Work Disappears.”

From David: I joined Times Opinion in 2023 and write about law, culture, religion and armed conflict. A common theme is that I like to explore the story behind the story. What are the reasons for American polarization and dysfunction? Why do so many Americans feel lonely and anxious? Before journalism, I was a commercial litigator and then switched to constitutional law. My most recent book, “Divided We Fall: America’s Secession Threat and How to Restore Our Nation,” outlined the dangers of polarization and the need to engage with people who have opposing viewpoints. Are you going to make a serious effort to understand why there is so much support for Luigi Mangione or are you going to wag a finger and lecture us?

Who will drive Ukraine policy more in this Trump admin, Rubio or Hegseth?

    4. What is the overall strategy of the incoming Trump administration to counter the Beijing-Moscow axis and how will the cabinet appointments be at odds with Trump’s unpredictability?

Why should anyone care about your opinion? Is there really any purpose to this AMA? This may as well be hosted by some random person off the street since it isn’t really an AMA presented by any sort of expertise.

      For David:
Have you read Bowling Alone by Robert Putnam? What is your opinion on his thesis? To what extent do you believe the incentive structure of News media has contributed to division in the US and elsewhere? In an increasingly decentralized Media environment how can well researched professional journalism from newspaper of record survive? To what extent, in your opinion, is the NYT guilty of modifying its content to suite the changing media landscape, particularly headlines.

      For Farah:
Paul Kagame’s government in Rwanda previously received a significant amount of attention for the complicated success it saw in establishing public order and stable growth. Often at the cost of civil liberties. To what extent do you see this dichotomy elsewhere in the developing world? From South Korea, Singapore, and Japan, to Turkey Saudi Arabia and Jordan, it seems the only success stories in the developing world go through phases of authoritarianism. Are these phases a contingent part of development?

What do the Trump cabinet picks say about how he wants the Ukraine-war to end?

    8. This is for Mr. French,

Why did you leave National Review? Was the reason directly related to National Review’s stance on Trump? Did others who left at the same time do so because of Trump?
