  1. Sounds about right. Many people myself included have left the ER while seriously sick or injured due to the insane wait time.

  2. Here comes the but “wE hAvE fREe hEalThCaRe”.

The Medicare system has collapsed in Canada, anyone that says otherwise hasn’t been unfortunate enough to visit a hospital in Montreal.

I almost left when the doctor denied that I had an ectopic. Thankfully, my bf at the time made me stay and I got medication to dissolve the zygote that would have caused a burst and ultimately internal bleeding!

    >sparking debate about Canada’s universal healthcare as debate rages in the U.S. over the state of the American for-profit system.

Ya he would have seen a doctor in like 16 min, then would have had to wait for the doctor to argue with the insurance provider if the tests where necessary or pay out of pocket.

Point being both systems are broken in different ways.

Here’s comes the free healthcare hate… ya know there are private clinics too if you hate it this much. Truth is, most of you can’t afford it anyways, so all you do is complain about what you get for free.

We have a public system. How many years has this man been paying into it? How many years were the people in front of him paying into it?

  7. Complete_Ride792 on

So, sadly, no different than in the US… ERs here are short staffed, over whelmed with long waiting times regardless of symptoms, and then your bills will put you in bankruptcy.

Never had that problem. In America I broke my ankle, went to the ER. Was deemed not emergency enough and told to wait. 4 hours later, I saw a doctor. 2 hours after that, I finally got X-rays. 1 hour after that I was told my ankle was broken and too swollen to tell if ligaments compromised. 1 hour after that, I was given a boot and crutches and given a $2,400 dollar bill. American healthcare is in shambles and is useless. Canadian system is AMAZING. It needs constant upgrading but it is LIGHTYEARS ahead of the US

If it was a thoracic aortic aneurysm, he had a 3% survival chance the moment he left the hospital. He was at risk, they should have done further testing. Inexcusable.

“Free” Healthcare but you can’t access it. Canada is rigging your taxes

This is really sad to hear and I feel for his family but on the other side of the coin, the guy knew something was wrong with him and decided to leave the hospital before being discharged and getting further tests.

It’s terrible he had to wait for six hours and they weren’t able to assess his condition right away but this should also show that people don’t know themselves as well as they do and need to stick it through for the proper testing regardless of wait times.

This would also cover the family if he got discharged without them diagnosising him correctly and they could take legal action after as well.

Regardless, this sucks for every party.

  12. Did people read the entire article? Where was this aneurysm that burst?? From the article, it sounded like he had a full cardiac work up for his cardiac-sounding problem which was not life threatening, so he didn’t die of a heart attack. Did an aneurysm in his brain burst? Because context and location very much matter.

People don’t realize that you could wake up dead one day and not realize it

6 hours??! Wtf, in Vancouver and Calgary it’s 9-10 hours+

We need to stop arguing with each other over any of this

We need to band together and hold our elected officials who are supposed to represent us accountable

We have all this money to spend on useless projects and shit that doesn’t benefit society in any way and we’re ok with it

Our neighbours are dying or aren’t receiving the care we have all paid into a s were ok with it

We as a society have really lost touch with what’s important anymore

There’s enough straw men to go around as to why this problem persists and there are many real reasons.

However wait times have been long for years and this is the exact kind of red meat those waiting for privatization are eager for. The more our system is underfunded, over burdened and mistreated, the more willing we will be to turn it over to a profit based private system.

I don’t think many of us will benefit from that. Make this issue a primary concern in every election. Care for our health care.

Only for an inquest to come along that pisses away even more money and manpower that ultimately does little more than say the obvious in “shit’s fucked, yo”.

Real example: Brian Sinclair’s death in Manitoba after waiting ***34 hours***. So bad that just like Vince Li’s Greyhound bus attack, it apparently passes WP:GNG and [has its own Wikipedia article](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Brian_Sinclair).

  18. I was brought to a hospital for shortness of breath and chest pain when I was his age a few yrs ago. Assessed and also put back in the waiting room. After 5 hrs i couldn’t take the pain of sitting up anymore and went home. My family doctor who I had left a message for earlier that day, called me and told me to go right back to the er. Went to a different er and was immediately diagnosed with a collapsing lung.
Edited to add I was brought to the first hospital y ambulance.

lol this guy was a bigoted POS, dumbass could have just not left the ER and waited. But had to go out and complain and tweet about it to prove a dumb point about the system. If he didn’t leave and there was an emergency right away they would have been there.

Yes it’s ridiculous and no one should wait that long, but you can blame those that are cutting spending into the health care system.

Anyways no sympathy for this guy.

    Edit: here’s proof he’s a bigoted

The horrendous wait times are not always due to but often attributed to the unprofessional atmosphere of the staff there. It’s like highschool hallways on crack. They are socializing with each other so much and neglecting their surroundings while they do it. It feels like there isn’t an adult in the room. Everyone is tattooed to the gills and the male paramedics are all posturing for the girls and all the women under 35 seem to care more about their looks and gossiping than running an efficient ER. I’m not saying they don’t care about their job or the patients, but they don’t treat it with the respect and discipline it deserves.

You notice a lot when you’re waiting for 10 hours with nothing to do but watch the staff. During this particular visit of mine the staff rushed a friend through , a coworker through, and a belligerent guy with a bee sting that wouldn’t leave without seeing a doctor – all ahead of people with more severe symptoms. They completely were ignoring the people on the floor and nobody was doing rounds and I had to go up and shout to get attention for a guy that was having trouble breathing in clear view of them. There is definitely a lack of discipline in the current generation of hospital workers.

My cousin died in the waiting room from a pulmonary embolism.
    Our health care is disgusting.

There are many things to improve about Canadian Healthcare. Turning it over to private executives needing to make profits is not one of them.

He was seen in a hospital and triaged based on the likely diagnoses. He decided to leave.

What he had was rare, and 999 of 1,000 otherwise healthy 39 year old men presenting like this do not have a thoracic aortic aneurysm.

This is an American media Corp trying to make hay with a tragic story as if that somehow dunks on Canadian healthcare, which has better outcomes than American across the population, at a fraction of the cost.

Again, is it perfect? No. Is making it into a for-profit venture the answer? Also a resounding no.

  23. OneForAllOfHumanity on

Don’t EVER give up waiting at the hospital – yeah, it might be a long boring wait, but while you’re there, there is immediate medical services if your symptoms call for it. Besides, you’re just going to go home and sit on the couch and watch TV because you’re not feeling well, so it’s not like you’re got better things to do.
