Submission Statement
India has bolstered its naval capabilities with the commissioning of INS Tushil, a Russian-built Talwar-class frigate equipped with advanced stealth-guided missile systems. The ceremony, attended by Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh in Kaliningrad, underscores India’s long-standing defense partnership with Russia, despite global geopolitical tensions. The vessel, a blend of Russian and Indian technologies, represents a milestone in India’s maritime strength and strategic autonomy. While maintaining ties with Moscow, India continues its delicate diplomatic balancing act, advocating for peace in Ukraine while enhancing its defense collaboration with Russia.
A “blend of Russian and Indian technologies”. That’s sold it to me.
A bit of a context since it would be missing from any discussion like this. This ship forms part of the Talwar class built by Russia since 2000. The goal for the Indian Navy had been to induct low cost but decent frigates to make up the numbers. They come with decent weopanary and the Russian armament slowly gets substituted for Western and Indian party ( the autcannnon would probably be replaced by SRGM 76 mm). Shivalik and the Nilgiri class form the high capability state of the art frigates of the Indian Navy.
The ship was ordered in 2018 and India is taking delivery.
