      That’s such a deeply fucked up and threatening thing to joke about towards a foreign leader about their country. It’s yet another example of how things are deviating from norms. Joke or not it’s dangerous rhetoric and makes me worry about the path we are heading down.

      Zelensky insisted there would be no invasion even as Russian helicopters were flying toward Kyiv. That’s not to compare this line to the invasion of Ukraine, but no competent government official is ever going to tell the public “it’s time to panic” or even “worry”.

      When there is tangible action that you can take (e.g. during the pandemic), officials will tell you what it is and how to do it in the way that balances severity with calm. Otherwise it’s “don’t stress, there’s nothing to worry about”.

      I guarantee the even if the Canadian government does not view it as realistic or a serious proposal, they are not dismissing it as a joke.

      Lol, the way people hysterically take everything little off the cuff remark Trump throws out as serious is hilarious. He just spouts this stuff randomly either as a tactic to keep people off balance, or because he has no real filters on the random stuff that pops into his head (or both).

      Back in the real world, how many years have they been trying to get Puerto Rico to be a state without success, and suddenly people are seriously worried that a whole separate country could get pulled into one in the 4 years of Trumps term? Give me a break.

      Yeah of course it was a joke but it’s not a joking matter. It’s not complex shit. Trump is a ham fisted, dim-witted bully with enormous power snd no guardrails. He’s a rapist, a criminal, corrupt, chronic liar, back stabbing narcissist who is being used as an agent of chaos while oligarchs consolidate and tighten their chokehold on all the resources on the planet. Everyone who thinks it hurts them to crash the economy need to remember that rich people got richer in every downturn. They don’t look at the economy and worry about paying bills or dollar amounts, they look at what percentage of everything they own. The more people struggle and suffer, the more they can buy and hoard. The more desperate the population, the easier to manipulate them. A hungry worker is an abusable worker. And I’ll remind everyone who said it could never be another Nazi style rise because that came out of a deep financial crisis in Germany, nobody is going to give a shit if Trump and Elon crash everything because they will just say deep state did it and drum up more division, hate and acceptance of dehumanizing perceived enemies. It’s not rocket science. Nobody believed it was happening under Hitler, either. The worse it gets, the better for the ghouls in charge drooling at the loot they are about to divvy up. Or something.
