Israel’s New Approach to Tunnels: A Paradigm Shift in Underground Warfare

SS: The article discusses the IDF preparedness and challenges in underground warfare, particularly during their operations in Gaza against Hamas.
Before the conflict, the IDF was highly advanced in subterranean combat, with specialized units like the Yahalom brigade and extensive technologies. However, Gaza’s complex tunnel network—spanning hundreds of miles under civilian areas, posed unprecedented challenges.
Hamas used these tunnels for mobility, defense, and as human shields, complicating the IDF’s operations. The IDF adapted by refining their tactics, integrating tunnel warfare knowledge across units, and innovating ways to counteract booby traps and other hazards. Yet, destroying tunnels remains a major challenge due to resource limitations and the vastness of the network.
Key takeaways include the IDF’s cultural shift toward proactively addressing tunnels, which has implications for future conflicts involving underground environments. Their experiences provide valuable lessons for other militaries facing subterranean threats.
The real solution to destroy tunnels would be to do underground detonation of 3 or 5 nuclear bombs to wipeout any structures. Of course civilian population would need to be evacuated for a month or two before returning to rebuild the area.
Didn’t even have to look at the article to know it was gonna be John Spencer writing it. Dude is obsessed with subterranean warfare. Also seems like Spencer puts significant weight on the lessons the IDF has learned about fighting in complex urban terrain since it’s founding. If you have never listened to his podcast “The Urban Warfare Project” that MWI produces, and you geek out on this stuff, there are some really interesting things to learn especially in light of Ukraine’s choices to commit to major urban battles in 2022 and 2023.
