I’m so glad I used to up October free shipping Tuesdays lol
Seems like the workers are pretty important and should probably be compensated as such.
Drivers are making an average of around $24/hr. If you live in Southern Ontario you may as well not even get off the couch for any less than $30/hr if you don’t already own assets.
Better give into the postal workers demand or this costs will continue to skyrocket.
>It’s not the Grinch who is about to steal Christmas. It’s Ottawa sitting idly on the sidelines,’ CFIB statement says
It’s strange how quick we’ve become to reflexively expect strike-breaking from this government. The dispute between Canada Post and their union has nothing to do with Ottawa unless you believe it’s somehow their duty to prevent the Charter-protected collective bargaining process from playing out. If you want to blame someone for this, Ottawa is not the most obvious or appropriate target to focus your ire on.
The fact that private carriers either won’t service these places due to profitability issues or the price far exceeds what Canada Post can offer while paying their drivers less than Canada Post just proves how important CP workers are.Â
Give them the raises they deserve.
I’m not so sure I’m going to believe a study done by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business. A grain of salt with this.
Welp, it’s killed my sending out Christmas cards. Got me to switch my utilities to ebilling. Only have 1 elderly relative to write monthly and she’ll be dead soon so….
So now stay on strike until February and let no one get the crap we need to file our taxes and watch the fireworks fly then.
Most of newfoundland can’t receive any packages because of this strike. Shit is getting old fast.
One more reason to vote out the government. Strikes are a reality of a capitalist system (assuming worker rights are a thing) but the government is the one who has to make this work from a timing perspective (its smart tactically to hold a strike when its most painful for the opposing party) and they are just shitting the bed. Everyone from the smallest of businesses to the fortune 500 are being impacted by this.
Justin Trudeau is pressured to take action but can’t because Jagmeet Singh threatened to vote non-confidence if he did (he won’t ever vote against the Liberals though).
Pierre Poillevre won’t say anything or take sides because he doesn’t have to risk his current winning position in the polls (and if the Liberals/NDP fumble this, it would also be great for him).
Oh boy.
Time to enact the emergencies act Trudeau, now’s your time to call in the military.
Haha all these calls for back to work legislation from Conservatives. “PP is a working class hero. He represents blue collar workers”. Also Conservatives, “Legislate CP employees back to work. They’re inconveniencing me.”
Yes. Strike action inconveniences people. That’s the point. People should be paid fairly and equitably in exchange for the time they give up to do a job.
If you don’t agree with that, go to a sweatshop in Thailand that has service delivery agreements with capitalist companies like Nike and Adidas.
Wait? No? That sounds horrible? You know why YOU have wages, benefits and a 40hr work week? Unions.
People whinge about how cost of living is extortionate and housing affordability is down, but then when unions go on strike to demand better wages to afford a reasonable lifestyle it’s, “Sorry. No can do. Get a real job”.
EVERY JOB IS A REAL JOB!!!!
Flipping burgers is a real job. Delivering mail is a real job. Being a janitor is a real job. Each and EVERY one of these workers *SHOULD* be able to afford a roof over their heads, feed themselves and their children and enjoy a few weeks vacation. Conservatives don’t agree with this, because they believe that some people don’t deserve nice things by virtue of the job they do. “I don’t need a degree to work in the oil patch but I deserve $100/hr for being an important industry worker”. Yeah. Postal workers deliver important services to Canadians too. YOU are no better or more important than the Timmies worker, the postie, or the janitor.
Your blue tie does not automagically allow you to join the millionaire/billionaire class. You don’t get tax breaks. You don’t get special treatment. If you lost your job tomorrow and couldn’t afford to house yourself after three months of non-payments, you’re working class and BILLIONAIRES and Conservative politicians are ACTIVELY working and voting AGAINST your interests.
Why is the Trudeau government sitting on their hands? Useless. This is far more important than feasting on trout and meatloaf with president cheeto. Trump will be dealt with in due time, nothing is going to stop him from implementing whatever idiotic self-destructive policies he has in mind. And particularly not showing up in Mara Lago to stroke his ego…
Unfortunately the reality is the job is a low barrier entry job.
Can you walk?
Can you drive?
Can you read and navigate with Google maps?
It’s a job that soon in the future will be able to be completed nearly autonomous as well.
Coupled with the thing called the internet eliminating the need for almost any paper copies or letters, it is now just a parcel delivery position and needs to pay in like with that.
I do agree countries will need to cope with the arrival of evenore automation however as it stands right now that problem is bigger than just Canada Post and the money pit it can easily become.
I’ve signed a couple petitions and I emailed my MP asking that the government ensure that there’s fair negotiations and Get Canada post and the Union back to negotiating
Pay them. It’s that simple.
(The action is Canada Post negotiating in good faith and not just waiting for a Free Market Solution® from the government forcing a shitty deal on the union)
I’m all for strikes and getting paid what you’re worth.
But I run a side gig, and I have to take 6 weeks off my day job for surgery (starting today) and was really counting on the $2000 I could have made with my very small business to keep me afloat during my unpaid time off. Now I’ll have to go back to work as soon as I can get on my feet.
The whole point of a strike is send a message of dissatisfaction. This is the best time to strike.
How much will updating the POS system for the GST holiday cost small businessÂ
Damn that’s crazy… Maybe if Canada Post is such an essential service, the government should just pay them?
Fuck the financial post and natpost. I support my fellow workers.
I know this is such a dumb small thing, but my kids are pretty bummed they can’t write an actual letter to Santa this year and get a response.
We already shut down our small business once the strike started. Not Canada Post fault but we tend to make the most money during Christmas and after issuing tons of refunds for stuck packages, we just gave up.Â
During covid our profits were 30,000. Cute little small business on the side for extra money.Â
This year, we barely made it to 10,000. It’s just not worth all the extra work, taxes, etc. Canada Post just put the nail in the coffin. November and December we should have easily made 10,000.Â
Government needs to negotiate not mandate
I call bullshit, nobody even noticed they are on strike
Time for business to change to online and using private couriers.
A lot of companies are switching from cheques to e-transfers now. It’s a move as big as office to work from home over covid.
