      move the earth. there was a crazy idea going around that if u explode all the bombs in the world on one side of the earth it may move it out of orbit… may have been a russian idea…

      People couldn’t even put a piece of cloth over their face to prevent a deadly disease. I have 0 faith that we’ll be able to come together and defend from an asteroid. Especially when half of the people on this planet will deny its existence.

      It will take a major population center getting hit by an asteroid.

      Then enough influential people will start to care about asteroid defense.

      Counter argument, can we not attempt to, and just hard reset the planet?

      Until recently we had zero capability to deflect anything larger then a 100m asteroid.

      We’re talking millions of tons.

      However since falcon 9 and soon to be starship with rapid reusability it now changes the calculus. Not to mention the missions over the last 20 years to various asteroids ie pysche being a good example. There was even one one, starts with D that we tested moving an asteroids orbit (from around another asteroid) several million kilometres away.

      For the last twenty years we’ve predominantly focused on creating an early warning system because calculating the orbits of asteroids years in advance is exceedingly hard (see the 3 body problem, and no I’m not talking about the show)

      Clearly, you train oil riggers to go to space, much easier than training astronauts to drill

      Drill teams trained as astronauts, as opposed to astronaut’s being showed how to hold a drill

      A sharpie has proven to be quite useful against hurricanes, so why not try an asteroid?

      At this point, i prefer the asteroid. I’m actually wondering if NASA could redirect one TOWARDS Earth right before Elon Musk takes control of our space program.

      Trump claimed only he can fix things. So we launch him at the asteroid. Gravitational deflection or high speed impact. Either would do nicely.

      People probably won’t take it seriously until the very last moment. Kind of like what’s happening now with global politics..

      NASA will have to recruit a team of deep-core drillers, including Harry Stamper and his daughter’s fiancé A.J. Frost to land on the asteroid and detonate a nuclear warhead.
