  1. Yeah, retaliation against our neighbour, and the biggest economy in the world will go great. We also have the best possible leadership currently to handle that.

Nah let’s just work with his admin and reach a deal. Seems like he already has with Mexico. We aren’t in the same position we were in 2016 to fire back.

  3. Article: targeted tariffs would be effective, but it’s better to work with the US and come to a deal.

R/Canada posters: we should just give in. When someone punches you in the face you should lay down and thank them. CBC and Trudeau bad.

I think it’s a bad idea to approach this as a fleeting spat that we can strategically navigate around.

Americans voted to substantially increase their cost of living in order to pivot to an economic strategy that is much more insular. They want to focus more on domestic production and consumption. There was no mincing of words during the Trump campaign that there will be some pain during this transition and people still voted for him.

Even after these four years, it’s quite possible American sentiment has soured on free trade long term.

We may need to rethink our long term trade strategy as well. Diversify to more markets. Be strategic about which domestic industries we must protect (we can’t do everything), and what infrastructure we need in place to make it happen (ports). It’s going to require a significant long term vision.

Let’s just ban our export of critical materials/minerals and oil to the us.

I don’t want to see Canada turn into a doormat for Trump, giving in would set a tone where others would take more from us.

Worst case we have to diverge our trading practices and seek new markets. The way the US economy is going it might be a good time to do so anyways….

Bourbon, playing cards and heinz ketchup? That’ll show em!

Trumps says he’s starting these on day one, which means 2 years away from any midterm elections….Canada’s economy will be in the shitter loooong before then.

They are also overestimating the effect of return tariffs on the American voter. The average person who voted for Trump does not own a bourbon still, or a heinz ketchup factory and are more likely to say FU to Canada in response to any economic hardships caused by a Canada imposed retaliation tariff.

If the ask is that we secure our own border and immigration then that’s something we should have been doing already! But ole open borders “Everyone is welcome to come to Canada and coming here makes you more Canadian than people living here for generations” Trudeau will cut off Canada’s nose to spite it’s face.

Oh well, I’m sure Freeland will come up with some trendy tik tok name for the upcoming recession. So far we’ve had the shecession, the vibecession, may be the Trumpcession? Though the more accurate name would be “We are an economically incompetent government” cession.

Can we use this as an opportunity to diversify our trading partners, finally? Should have done so a long time ago, or at the very least the last Trump go around. US has proven itself to be an unreliable trade partner, repeatedly. We can’t have all our eggs in that basket anymore…

Without the US we are forced to go to Europe or China or both. There is no use of pursuing Mexico cause no matter what, we will never make up the US demand and same for them, they do not have the US buying power.

Pivot to China or pivot to Europe – no other option.

Apparently we can fight them by actually patrolling and securing our borders, maybe we should start there?
