Because it suits the IDU’s goals to destroy the Canadian economy.

      Because it is?

And it’s a problem both ways. Illegal immigrants going into the US from our side. And contraband (guns drugs etc) coming up from their side.

Just because Mexico is a bigger problem doesn’t make our border an ignorable issue.

    4. Because the border is 9000km long and we have allowed too many poorly vetted immigrants in. We are no longer a trustworthy neighbour. Trump is 100% right to bully us into securing our border better.
Here’s the kicker: a secure border is better for us too! Y’all keep talking about the flow of guns, drugs and criminals – do something about it and avoid a trade war.

    5. He doesn’t know how to be president. He only knows how to say sensational things for rallies. He’s announcing things like he’s still running.

    6. He knows that the majority of people in his country aren’t interested in facts and will listen to any compelling story.

But he’s not entirely wrong, Canadian officials do have some power in this situation, and limiting visas from countries who are known to encourage this sort of behavior is one of them. It’s also something that Canadians themselves have raised as an issue, but are being told they aren’t allowed to say the quiet part out loud.

    7. Because his whole schtick is ‘the problem is not me/us, its someone else!’

    8. Because he reacts to what he sees on the internet.

Right wing media trashes canada constantly, so all Trump sees is headlines acting like Canada is Somolia.

So obviously he reacts to the overblown rage bait that gets pushed by algos.

It is literally the same as every other country with nearing elections. The misinformation is strong and only getting stronger.

Because our immigration system was always porous and open to abuse and Trudeau’s throwing our doors open meant that screening was rudimentary at best. Anyone could slip into the country.

    10. Every year, tens of thousands of people come to Canada on visitor or student visas and just walk right across the border into US, never to be seen again.

Whether the MSM, politicians and the TDS sufferers like it or not, Trump has a point

    11. Meanwhile our country is rife with guns from the states. Maybe they could get their gun issue under control

Trump and Biden have a job. Protect the USA. We are not a part of the USA. Our border has been relatively porous. As indicated many times, by many people, all these recent homegrown terrorist incidents and catching known terrorist affiliates inside our borders (legally) doesn’t put our allies at ease. I have said before. We, as Canadians, take the power of our passport for granted. That passport’s gleam is fading and we will suffer for it.

As for the tarrifs, if they happen, they suck for us. It is dramatic and it is a very poor treatment of the USA’s allies. With that said, we have been asked time and again by Republicans and Democrats in the USA to strengthen our security and raise our military. We have been blasé about it. Trudeau acknowledged at one point that he had no plan to meet military spending requirements that we agreed to with our allies. Our air defense, our sea defense and our overall military are failing (not our soldier’s fault. You can only act on what you have). He also called us the first post national state. Our allies have been watching and listening. Eventually, it was going to come home to roost. It can be called an excuse to bully us/scapegoat us (and it partially is), but we caused it ourselves. Our recent willingness to sell rare minerals to China, resulting in the USA begging us not to and, in the end, bribing us not to, will all be held against us.

Canada needs to look at itself, closely. For a country that loves to talk about world view, we often forget we don’t exist in a vacuum. If we don’t want people firing shots at us, we should be avoiding putting targets on ourselves. The world is playing hard ball right now. The USA has no time for allies that want to be bench warmers.

Because people are gaining easy access to Canada and then hopping across the border to the U.S.

Between 2020 and 2024, approximately 170,000 Indian immigrants were detained trying to illegally cross the border.

    14. Same reason they blame Mexico for drugs entering the US – but never address that the US is the biggest user of illicit drugs.

Somehow that is not a US problem – the drug demand part – when it clearly is a US only problem.

    15. He campaigned heavily on the border issue. Canada is one of the borders. He is doing what he said he would do.

I think Canada crossing numbers were low, in the 10 thousands, so not a huge deal in the grand scheme of things. But what if 10% of that number is people with bad intents, and they carry out an attack in USA? The intelligence agencies uncovered a plot around October 7 and the perpetrators were planning to enter USA through Canadian border. So, he’s not out of place to ask for tightened security.

That said, Canada can’t protect the entire border since it’s too long. But Canada can limit people entering the country through visa and student programs. They can do better background and security checks. And I don’t know why these checks are not done in the first place, it’s for the best for both countries.

I can tell you one thing from my personal experience, the ocean between us and the rest of the world is the biggest strategic advantage we have. We have control over who enters our country via air travel – but for some reason, the government recently stopped caring about that. And I’m happy that they will have to bring back the security to pre-2021 levels.

People come here through our broken immigration system and walk across the border.

    17. I read an interesting theory that makes sense. The only way to pass tariffs without congressional approval is through Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962.

“This law states that the president can raise tariffs on **imports that pose a threat to national security**. Section 232 allows the President to implement these tariffs without the approval of Congress, following an investigation by the Department of Commerce”.

So he needs to come up with a security risk to justify the tariffs and immigration/drugs is the perfect excuse to pass blanket tariffs on such a wide range of goods (all imports).

    18. While I think Trump is throwing proposals on borders and tariffs just as an unrealistic starting point for further negotiations, there might be some reasoning to this. Canadian government is going to make between 1 mln and 5 mln people illigal in Canada in the next year and is expecting them voluntarily leave the country. Since it’s way more difficult to live illigaly in Canada, than in the US, a lot of these people will be moving South. This could be the first step to prevent it, if we assume someone next to Trump can think 2 steps ahead.

We are taking in people from gaza, middle east, and everywhere. These people can very well go in the US and stage something, even though highly hypothetical. But that is what the US is worried about.

We have to stop our immigration non sense, even without the US having to tell us to do it. The liberals are pathetic because this is what it takes for them to actually move.

That’s how he negotiates. It makes him look tough to his base. It makes his adversaries panic and puts him in a better position.

It’s really more the Canadian ports. Illegals come to Canada then just waltz across the boarder to the US. It’s really hard to stop unless Canada gets much stricter with our own immigration policy’s. To be real neither Canada or the US has the resources to patrol our boarder effectively but Canada absolutely does have the resources and should regulate traffic through our ports better. US and Canada would both benefit if we did.

    22. I always say, a broken clock is right twice a day. There is human smuggling/trafficking occurring at our border. I don’t like it because then we lose track of people and they are set up to be abused, or people die while doing it .
