It wouldn’t do for the peasants to have any say at the local level.
I’m not sure there’s any sort of guarantee, or even confidence, that unitary authority planning won’t be taken over by NIMBYs just like county council planning has.
Dead set against this, live in a seni-rural area our local District Council is highly responsive to local needs and planning on the whole balances the need for new development with protection of the countryside. It would go down here like a bucket of cold sick.
Please force the Welsh Government to do this as well, there are 22 local authorities in Wales so with a population of about 3m that’s about 1 local authority for 140,000 people.
The Senedd is getting bigger and a cynical person might say they’re just creating jobs for 2nd and 3rd rate politicians instead of spending the money on fixing the problems the country has.
Sounds like a fantastic idea, they can’t do Derbyshire quick enough… It’s currently like a post-code lottery on what services are available, and you get the distinct feeling that at-least in the city, a bunch of drunk toddlers could do a better job.
The idea of reducing waste by ensuring we aren’t doing the same things over and over again makes total sense – do two councils less than 30 mins apart really need to reinvent the wheel on literally everything, when we’re also still paying for the county council who do the same?
I hope they do similar with the NHS and GP surgeries, managing them all centrally, rather than them being self-employed independent contractors who run their own surgeries.. It’s madness.
Seems to follow the normal trend. Literally everything is pretty much on the decline nowadays. Cuts and slashes across everything a country well and truly devided
The replacement of two tier authorities by unitary ones has been happening for nearly 40 years. There is no great conspiracy to finishing the process.
Fucking hell some of the comments on this.
We KNOW that local councils are failing, they’re dreadful. So reform is needed at a very high level for this.
Honestly this country is sometimes so against change it’s unreal.
A big problem our way is that all the various local governments just pass responsibilities and blame onto other levels, and take credit for successes of whatever turns out well.
Good. layer after layer of govt inefficiency
We need fewer councils
I personally would prefer regional assemblies and District / City Councils, nothing else.
Good. Local councils from my experience are utterly useless and unhelpful.
Every single interaction I’ve had with mine has been a bad one. They need to be improved and reminded they are there to help the people in their area
I vote for 5 tiers of representation where I live

Oh and the Police one too, whatever the hell that is!
My unasked for thoughts on consolidating councils:
Good in some cases, bad in others.
In some areas you really don’t need a dozen different councils, but in others you need more local representation. I think the main area that needs it (biased, I’ll admit) is rural areas. Rural and sub-urban/urban needs are very different, having a council that covers both areas at once only leads to the less populated rural areas being left behind. Now could you combine some rural councils together? Sure – but combining rural with urban isn’t a good idea.
