I’d rather they detained people than set them free. How much do people want to pay to create great conditions and where does the money come from? Additional tax rises or more cuts?
The civil service / home office are so utterly useless.
Our politicians so utterly spineless and idea-free.
20 years ago they should have built a huge purpose made detention centre with good standards of care for these poor people and then systematically deported anyone who doesn’t meet the criteria for asylum.
The civil service want to be too nice so they don’t put the structure in place and the politicians want to look harsh for the population so they don’t fund it properly.
Meantime the illegal entities to the UK continue and honestly we need to stem the flow more brutally.
Monumental ceck up
I don’t get why we don’t have a large high security detention centre…or several of them. It seems sensible to me that you’re held there (in a safe, secure environment with access to medical services and legal support) until the case is concluded or we can be sure of who you are and what your story is…or you decide to leave the country voluntarily.
It would stop alot of the people gaming the system if you couldn’t just turn up and get a bus to London
It’s hard to beleive quite how badly we’ve managed this situation.
We didn’t need Rwanda just to change the law and change the pull factors.
There needs to be an absolute zero tolerance policy towards anyone arriving illegally using small boats.
Make it absolutely clear that their claim will receive blanket denial because of method of entry. No exceptions.
Immediate detention in a remote facility with very basic services until they opt to voluntarily return to their point of origin.
Countries who refuse to take back their citizens will be met with an immediate reduction in aid to zero and diversion of any UK funded service until they change their mind.
[Make it known that this is a zero tolerance policy.

The government can divert the funds used to put these people in hotels (the billions and billions of pounds each year) towards enacting this policy.
S friend of mine used to run an asylum centre and some of the stories he told me really enlightens you about how the system is abused and that there is a simple solution.
This is the problem when the public keeps voting for the people witht he harshest rhetoric but softest actions.
The Tories entire Asylum plan was based on pretending there’s no legal obligation to take asylum seekers and then promising to send them to Africa – completely unrealistic, unworkable and illegal.
But that enables them to say “WE ARE HARSH ON IMMIGRATION!” When under the Tories the system got much much much worse.
All we need to do to stop the boats is immediately put all men who arrive (99%) into tented refuge camps and don’t let them leave until approved or deported.
Then simultaneously, change the law so all asylum claims have to be made before you arrive. Turning up illegally means immediate tent detention and deportation.
You could do this AND save billions, but the people running the home office do not want to.
The MPs also cannot fire anyone in the home office. They have very little actual power. Prime example is Priti Patel. She was hard right on immigration and still couldn’t sort it.
The problem is our institutions
