      Not-so-fun-fact: The LTTE popularized the use of the suicide vest in insurgencies and terrorist attacks (they were a Tamil nationalist group, not Islamists).

      It’s wild that this civil war was sizzling under everyone’s radar for years, given its bloodiness and the insane strategies adopted by the Tamil Tigers. I still remember how the news media would barely mention developments in this war in passing towards the late-90s and early-2000s. Even the 2004 tsunami failed to stop the fighting like it did with the Aceh insurgency.

      Had a sense of deja vu with Myanmar’s civil war.
