  1. LOL here in America we no longer do science so good luck to the rest of you I’m getting a coal fired pick up truck

  2. War, climate change, alien invasion, artificial intelligence take over… I just want to see one positive thing coming out of the news

“… satellite measurements show that ice loss in Antarctica is accelerating, and today is more than six times faster than 30 years ago. So far, most loss has come from West Antarctica, where warm ocean waters are melting the ice sheet.”

“… the rate at which the Antarctic ice sheet will continue to be lost remains deeply uncertain. Runaway ice loss causing rapid and catastrophic sea-level rise is possible within our lifetimes.”

These researchers are probably wrong. It will actually be sooner than they are predicting.

If it wipes out Florida then it’s fine, actually might benefit the planet more.

  6. Now that Trump will be in charge of the US, there is no hope left to mitigate climate change. He’s going to get rid of all environmental rules. We’re absolutely fucked. Get ready to suffer and watch your friends and family suffer. Try to enjoy the little time we have left of “normal” life.

  7. I don’t get the focus on ~~seal~~ sea level rising. I’m more concerned about runaway heating and the famines it could cause. Sea level rises are localized concerns that are expensive but not deadly. Loss of crops though is a different matter.

It’s just pissing into the wind at this point. A substantial minority have decided for the rest of us to not do anything.

  10. OK so is it nuclear war or sea levels, or viruses, or micro plastics, or…

Imagine the sea levels rising and wiping out Mar a Lago. It’s those images that help me sleep at night

I think most people like to shrug off these reports but as a scientist who has pined and tried for years to get to Antarctica, it is incredibly difficult.

These people are not goofballs at the ass of the earth; they are literally the best down there doing insane research and have gone through the most thorough certifications.

“The East Antarctic ice sheet alone holds enough water to raise global sea levels by approximately 50 metres if completely melted.”

50 meters equals about 55 yards or 164 feet.

As the saying goes “The world is what you make it”… a fucking shit storm apparently.

  17. 99% of the world who ultimately can’t do anything: “Haha, we’re in danger”

  18. Oh look. Consequences are here. If only we’d had decades of warning…

  19. ‘Cause I’m praying for rain

    I’m praying for tidal waves

I wanna see the ground give way

I wanna watch it all go down

Mom, please flush it all away

I wanna see it go right in and down

I wanna watch it go right in

Watch you flush it all away

When the smartest people in the world makes these ominous statements, and quite a frightening percentage of people say “nah fake news, I rather put my money and faith into a criminal to lead America”. We deserve all that comes to us

A lot of the U.S. Midwest is actually a former seabed. Maybe it will be again.

Goodbye, North Atlantic conveyer belt; it was nice knowing you. 😭 I guess they’ll be ice skating on the Thames again, like they did during the Little Ice Age.

Kim Stanley Robinson’s Mars Trilogy is looking more and more real by the day. If a volcano erupts under Antarctica we’re done for.
