  1. When I was a brand new nurse we were thoroughly educated about not calling elderly patients names like honey or sweetie because they were demeaning. At 25 I thought that was silly but I did as I was told. Now that I’m 60, I get it. It is very condescending when you hear it said to you. It makes it sound like somebody’s about to pat you on the head.

  2. Terms of endearment used in communication with anyone other than family and loved ones is creepy and unprofessional.

Context is everything. The relationship, the audience, the tone, the subject of the conversation – all of it matters. My grandmother called me dear. Older people may use it appropriately and innocently as a term of respect. It’s become archaic among younger people, but you might say it sarcastically, like as a bit, a quick character play to make a point. Even that is pushing toward the line, if not blowing past it.

Here, in my humblest of humble opinions, it was definitely condescending, but I wouldn’t say vicious. He’s definitely trying to insult and put her in her place, but anytime a debate gets heated and you vehemently disagree with someone (or pretend to), you veer toward this behavior. Execution is key, and, to me, it was mild on the scale of shit I might say if I think someone is being dishonest or really dumb. I don’t know what he truly felt or what his true intentions were — when it’s Trump-related, I assume it’s a con until proven otherwise — but I will say, from the clip, it appears he accepted the admonition and they all moved on from there.

    As it should be.

The problem with harping on these sensationalist “gotcha” moments – the scene of a reality TV show that they use to advertise the next episode – is it distracts from the facts – and the lies being spewed on the show. (I admit I didn’t watch this particular show, just the clip — I’m speaking generally.)
