Wow, I’m honestly kinda surprised there are so many US routes. Eve. The hundreds of tiny counties in Texas and Georgia almost all have some mileage.

  2. Interstates make it possible to travel across the USA and not see a thing.

Northwestern NC has US 421, US 321, and US 221 going through it.

  4. What’s the point of an interstate in Hawaii? Does it help connect suburbs or what?

Update: Today I learned that Interstates in the US are just highways.

Those yellow counties in IL make up an area called Forgottonia. There was a movement there in the late 60s and early 70s to secede from the union due to changes in highway plans. The plan was simple; they would secede from the union, declare war on the US, immediate surrender, and then apply for foreign aid. They had an official flag (the white flag of surrender), an official monster (Piasa), and had an acting governor, Neil Gamm (who was acting governor because he was a theater student at Western IL).

Another thing I forgot to add, some interstates like I-69 are currently under construction in parts of their route, so I tried to color in the counties with currently open segments.

I used Google Maps and Wikipedia to double-check, since some counties almost contain an interstate but are just outside their borders, such as Owen county KY. Counties like Butler county NE and Lunenburg county VA are tricky, since the Butler county line goes along US-81, and Lunenburg county is listed on Wikipedia as only containing the eastbound section of I-85.

  7. Those red countries running north south in Central California all have good sizes cities along CA-99. Fresno County is misleading as I-5 cuts through the Western portion of the county where no ones lives. Basically I-5 was put in to bypass the San Joaquin Valley population centers. 99 meets up with I-80 in Sacramento and I-5 (okay, “The Five”) south of Bakersfield.

They have multiple highways in alaska that stretch more north and west where they are colored red.

  9. I like how you can kind of trace the interstates with all the counties until you go west to the Rocky Mountains and it’s just like GIANT COUNTIES NOW!

I think of Dekalb County Tennessee that is literally.5 miles away from having an interstate within it’s border but because it takes a right turn at some point it misses it.

Wayne County NY for example has several state highways that are as good as any US highway, even some with 4 lanes, so not sure the US vs state distinction is that important. Anyway great map though, very interesting.

  12. I like how I 84 thinly cuts through southern Idaho. It’s like they made tiny counties just for the interstate.

  13. 7 states with all counties at least having a US route:

3 in west (AZ, NV, WY) and 4 in East (NH, CT, DE, SC). Surprisingly Rhode Island is not one of them!

Rhode Island, along with Massachusetts have two counties with no interstates or US routes. (Thanks u/382wsa )

Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Utah and Oklahoma have a exactly one county each with no interstate or an US route.

Very detailed and interesting map. Thank you, OP.

  14. Living in one of the red ones in NM. Funnily, this is one of the richest and most educated counties in the whole US.

  15. Are you actually counting the one mile of 535 (which is mostly bridge) in Douglas County, WI?

I’d look up US 165. Lots of mileage on that one across Louisiana and Arkansas that I know goes through a lot of unmarked counties and parishes in your map

  17. To make this map more interesting, please provide some history about Interstate highways, otherwise its just wall art.

Yuba and colusa counties in California have rte 20 going through them.

Yeah, even though Nance County doesn’t have either type of highway can’t take away the fact that we have the Mormon Trail.
