Seems entirely sensible as long as it’s a separate waitlist to the driving test. Heard it’s already at silly levels.
Drivers aged 85 cause as many deaths per mile as drivers and 18 to 24.
And because they drive less miles, drivers aged 85 cause ment less deaths overall then those aged 18 to 24.
Drivers aged 70 cause much less deaths than drivers aged 18 to 24.
Why are we targeting the groups that cause less deaths?
Everyone should have licence reviews every 10 years. Yes it will increase the pressure on test centres etc, but if it were to happen then jobs would be created to cope with the additional demand.
Yeah not a chance in hell any government passes this. Can you imagine the outrage from the Mail and Telegraph not to mention the majority of voting people if they have to pass checks to drive.
“A group which represents older drivers” is owned and run by Hampshire Constabulary Road Safety Team. It is an “astroturf” group masquerading as grassroots. Statistics repeatedly show that drivers between the ages of 17 and 24 pose a much greatest risk than drivers aged 65 to 80. It would be grossly discriminatory to select “drivers over the age of 65” for restrictive interventions. Instead of the police posturing for the media with this kind of stuff, they would do better to target the group most likely to cause death or serious injury.
Problem is this government can’t seem to do anything without heavy pushback, this will just be seen as something to pair with the WFA as an attack on pensioners.
So yeah would be very sensible but not going to happen unfortunately.
