But why? Can’t Russia or reach all of Ukraine with conventional missiles? This seems extremely expensive for no reason.

  2. Is the situation for Russia this bad, that they need to create fear of nuclear war?

  3. Russia serving an intercontinental breakfast when Ukraine giving it the full English.

ICBMs are famously in accurate, at least when it comes to small scale, with accuracy ranges going up to 100m+, hence why they are almost entirely used either for strikes on very large targets or using nuclear warheads.

Given Ukraine isn’t stockpiling ammo or supplies or anything in large enough patches to make icbm use economically sound (they do cost a lot) it’s very safe to say this is purely for show

Russia is threatening everyone with that launch. No one believes in nuclear blackmail anymore, so they are trying to raise the stakes.

Since these missiles don’t have conventional payloads, they likely used the inert dummy warheads that are used during testing. Accuracy would not have been great. Overall this is an expensive political stunt that probably did less damage than a strike with six Iskander missiles would have done.

Russia was probably just as surprised as us that it actually launched.

  9. Putin should just solve this with good faith dialogue instead of threatening world war 3

  10. Also reported on by The Guardian in the UK, who amusingly abbreviate ICBM to “IBM” (sic).

It made a bigger impact in the media landscape than in Ukraine’s landscape

  12. Bet this was the whole shelter in place order earlier for the us embassy in Kyiv. Bet the US so them getting this ready.

  13. Ah yes, because ICBMs with orbital trajectory is what you use to strike a target a few hundred km from your border. Because during the entirety of Cold War the idea of placing rockets as close to enemy territory as possible did occur, but the idea of strapping a nuclear payload to short/mid range missile did not. /s

There are better tools for doing this. And using ICBM is just a waste of ICBM. So I call BS on that.

Space Force would be watching that one closely. It’s not every day that you get to test your detection and tracking systems against a real hostile ICBM.

You better bet that all of the Russian disinfo bots are going to be talking about this one soon.

I support Ukraine but maybe russia ain’t joking this time 🤔

  17. Wonder how long before the MAGAs of the world start shouting on socials about how irresponsive that launch was of putin, how dangerous (launch of an ICMB could be… misunderstood by others) and how it was so unnecessarily escalatory of ruSSia, and how there will be consequences for putin.
