Lovely country, lovely people. Unfortunately the corruption of the politicians and the apathy of its citizens prevents Malta from being the gem it could be

There was a time when people were kind and amazing, were you could swim across the bay to get an icecream, it was safe for kids to play on the streets till late at night.
Long gone now. Corruption and greed has led to an overpopulated unsafe concrete jungle.
I miss when we were poorer but happier. Life was simple back then

I’m enjoying it. I work with great people doing stuff that matters.

My main issues are the number of empty, decaying buildings, the lack of cycling and walking infrastructure and the general hatred for green spaces. Oh and litter. Folks here are half a century behind other places when it comes to litter and the environment.

I don’t have a lot of time for locals who complain about construction or TCNs as it’s locals doing construction and hiring TCNs.

The corruption we see is no different to the U.K. or Ireland. It’s just more visible because Malta is the size of a small city. What’s fascinating is their bravado. It’s “kid with jam all over their face denying they ate the jam”.

Quality of life went down a lot last few years, Indians absolutely everywhere, ppl are mostly bad, island is dirty but somehow you still miss it after you leave.

Im living here since 2005, and yes it changed a lot here. However not all to the bad.

When i arrived it was all easy and cheap and much less traffic, in the shops where maltese who sorry to say, did not all speak english.
There was not much variety of stuff to buy in the shops, malls where bot really existing. Online shoping was not existing, deliveries where not existing, chocholate was british (i dont like that), food variety was less, the public maltese bus system was apart from “cute looking” slow, noicy, black smoke, breakdown galore…

Now, there is obviously much more variety of what you can buy, order, eat.

Traffic is horrible, public transport is modern but still sucks as its stuck between all the traffic…

Staff in the shops are not maltese anymore and still don’t speak English 😀

And yes, there are still no Mountains or forests, also skiing is not good at all here, except if you pick up water-ski, which you can do year round. Or surfing, kiting, diving, swimming, sailing…

  7. I enjoyed visiting, but I couldn’t live there long-term. Too crowded, public transport is slow due to all the traffic, trash everywhere and stressed-out, unhappy people in service jobs wherever I went. Gozo was nicer, but still crowded.

I’m now in Chania, Crete, and it is delightful. Very quiet, no trash on the streets, good prices for food and lodgings, friendly locals and fantastic food. One of the mellowest small cities I’ve ever been to.

A formerly beautiful and peaceful place destroyed by greed and corruption. And a government that blatantly displays how much it doesn’t give a sht about its own people.

Love it! I moved here from Scandivavia for business.

The island has its flaws, but in general, it’s really a nice place, easy to settle down in as a younger person – especially since English is an official language. Friendly bars, lots of activities and things to do.

What do you wonder in particular?
