  1. Great, so the solution is to get lots more people to be highly engaged.

Gotta work on communication for the next run. While I’m very critical of Biden, there are legitimately good things he accomplished during his time in office that flew under the radar for a lot of people. And like it or not, the Right has gotten very good at using podcasts and social media to get their message out to voters.

This was the risk we were always gambling with when we started doing those voter registration drives, that we would rope in people who really had no business voting and had stayed out of the fray because they knew damn well they had no idea what was going on. But apathy sucks so we tried to get more people to care, but it turns out they barely cared enough to register and they voted for conman because they still had no idea what was going on.

  4. flyover_liberal on

They told me they like Trump because he tells it like it is, but when I tell Trump voters how it is, they really don’t like it.

  5. AloneBookkeeper9292 on

So there were 600,000 bullet ballots for Trump , and none for Kamala?

  6. It used to be most people watched the news and most people got the paper. Even if you only reached for the sports section, you got some actual news in your day.

Now there’s nothing like that. We all live online where bullshit is free and plentiful and journalism is hidden behind paywalls.

There is no one reason for Trump’s reelection and everyone’s certainty there is – and what a coincidence it aligns perfectly with my preexisting preferences! – is nonsense. There is no panacea. But, man, would it be good for small d democracy if real journalism and reporting was popular.

  7. And now they will reap what they sow, and the leopard will eat their face.

  8. Sure_Quality5354 on

Confirming my theory that what ultimately swung this election to trump was indifference and apathy. How fucking sad

“Democrats won people with no lives and nothing better to do, while struggling with the people maintaining the economy and various groups typically associated with voting democrat”

  10. CarefullyChosenName- on

Yea, no shit. Nobody paying attention could live with themselves if they voted for Trump.

  11. che-che-chester on

I think Harris tried to simply her message with “freedom” but nobody cared. Most voters just heard Trump say he’ll fix everything with zero actual plans and thought that sounded great. Then they tapped into transphobia with their new ad campaign at the end.

  12. Reviews-From-Me on

So basically, those who actually paid attention voted for Harris, while those who stayed ignorant voted for the corrupt celebrity.

  13. anti_hope_dealer on

We need new vehicles and methods for the dissemination of information.

  14. Dems need to counteract voter supression measures that cause long lines. More polling stations with more voting machines in urban areas.

I bet lots of voters that didn’t care enough to enter hours long lines would have voted if the lines were very short.

6 hours in some places! Longest I’ve ever had to wait to vote was like 10 minutes.

  15. >76% of registered voters said they follow public affairs and politics closely.

    ok bud

  16. Traditional_Gas8325 on

Let me rephrase that title: Democrats won voters who agreed with the quality of their past performance.

  17. -AnythingGoes- on

Now Dems know for next time that they need to stop trying to be honest and using so many words, and just lie and use nice sounding buzzwords/phrases instead if they want to get their message across and win people over.

  18. Curious-Still on

It’s the economy stupid. Check out $ites on pump dot fun if you need a more visual explanation 🙂

  19. PolloConTeriyaki on

They should’ve just said they’d lower the prices of eggs and cars and fucking Disneyland tickets.

  20. We implored people to go vote, but didn’t consider who they would vote for or where they got their information from.

A Clinton or an Obama had enough charisma — especially in relation to their opponents — to get across to low information voters. Even Joe Biden in 2020 did okay, but there were a lot more people paying attention to politics that year and Trump had really screwed up Covid.

Most people don’t pay close attention to politics. They get information passively from their environment, and never question whether their beliefs are actually correct. These people vote on vibes, and either support continuing the status quo when times are good, or rejecting the status quo when times are bad.

Trump was elected by low information voters who vote infrequently and who chose to reject the status quo because of the economy or whatever.

  21. MountainMan2_ on

Translation: social media bought the election for trump, specifically Elon musk and Chinese interests at tiktok, by catching uninformed voters in ways that are impossible without controlling a major social media app.

  22. I wonder if it’s possible that Trump’s rhetoric can induce political apathy. People tune in because he makes fun of the enemy of the day, and you don’t know who the enemy is but you’re told it’s the establishment that’s been keeping you down.

Then it ends and that’s all the politics you have time for today. It doesn’t matter that there wasn’t any substance.

So people become more and more uninformed, and even more inclined to vote for 45.

Is that just the whole thing for both sides? Is that why Biden’s most memorable moment was the Dark Brandon meme? And why barely any progressives noticed that we were going to lose badly?

    We were entertained!

I bet a lot of us tuned into more Trump fail compilations than Harris interviews over the election.

  23. yankeephil86 on

Obviously, democrats won the “vote blue no matter who” crowd. They struggled with voters that actually researched and compared the candidates.

  24. SFShinigami on

This was the election where I stopped believing that truth matters.

I’m pretty sure thats the sentiment behind a lot of the swap to Bluesky, too.

  25. ErusTenebre on

Yeah, I mean that checks out.

What’s sad to me is so many of us informed voters weren’t informed about how many truly uninformed voters there were… like the fact that people didn’t realize Biden wasn’t on the ballot THREE MONTHS after he left the race.

Jim Jefferies once made a joke about a “train” of society. Scientists/Engineers/Atheists are in the Engine, Agnostics in the second carriage, Religious people in the last overwhelming large carriage weighing down the entire train, preventing progress.

It was prescient at the time, and it’s even more true as time goes on and the train slows down further.

Every single philosopher from Aristotle, Plato to Confucius, Thomas Hobbes has spoken against democracy. Not to be mean or anything. You don’t vote on how to treat cancer. 90% of the country has ZERO idea what it means to run a country properly. There are always more stupid people than people who knows wtf they are talking about. Democracy ALWAYS leads to demagogues taking over the state, voted by the tyranny of the masses. Even the Founding Fathers spoke in length about this topic and devised the system with three branches to specifically counter a demagogue rising in power.

Plato said it best, in “The Republic”, voting rights need to be “earned”, not “given” to a person. Heck, you can start with something simple like everybody can vote but you need to do very basic shit first (1) finish school/go through credits on civic courses to at least understand how the State functions/basic values the US and (2) 3-10 hours course before EACH ELECTION to understand current events and what we are voting for/against. You can watch all the Fox News/CNN/MSNBC of your choice it doesn’t count shit and may as well treat it for what it is – entertainment. You need to have EARN your vote with understanding of problems at hand.

Right now a dumbfuck waking up in the morning googling “why is biden not running?” have the same vote as anybody here who probably spent more than reasonable time researching your candidate. Heck that dumbfuck is probably from a less populated/swing state so they are somehow up to FOUR TIMES more valuable than your California vote. It’s a miracle our system even lasts as long as it did because every single thing about how to run a country is fucked with this system.

  27. naththegrath10 on

This is what republicans were in the 90s and 00s. It’s part of why they won down ballot. Dems need to have some self reflection about how to win people who believe the system isn’t working. Instead this last election Dems became the party of defending the broken system.

  28. AtomicNick47 on

I want to say the quiet part out loud for once. The majority of Americans are illiterate idiots with a severe lack of critical thinking abilities and generations of brainwashing.

  29. ApproximatelyExact on

or struggled to defend our elections from russia, guess we’ll never know >!if we don’t care!<

  30. I’m highly engaged and would never have voted for them

Highly engaged means nothing you can be highly engaged but brainwashed and living in an echo chamber

Which is what it looks like happened for all these voters

  31. Dems got all the votes for the people who where already going to vote for them. The DNC establishment would rather let us backslide into fascism than to improves thw material conditions of the public. They know we what we want, but they keep dangling shit above our heads saying it’s for the “next time” they get in office…Not everybody can wait until 2028 for the Dems to actually do anything. Especially not the people who do not benefit from the status quo. Neoliberalism is giving rise to fascism. Either we evolve our country, or we let it crash and burn so those at the top can shove us all into the meatgrinder.

  32. So what, is the take away that we need firebrands constantly reminding people that politics takes place on a daily basis and to at least check in once in a blue moon? Like this makes sense to me – we were all house ridden and wondering when the fuck we could live again back in 2020 so ok we’re all connected. If anything, at bare minimum, wouldn’t people be able to put two functional brain cells together to go “oh right that really shitty period was with Trump, and we should band together to make sure that doesn’t happen again”

Well, guess we’ll all be super informed again after RFK brings forth the next plague. Maybe next time, if there is one, people will remember that this happens every 4 years.

Also make voting day a national holiday, fucking hell- let’s all take the day off, stand in line, and go get fucked up while grilling some dogs.

–edit; not changing dogs to hotdogs. cause we’re out here eating the cats and dogs and pets!

  33. harley97797997 on

The Democrats won this election for Trump. Since 2016, they’ve run on the anything but Trump platform. In 2016, they put up Hillary because people recognize her name, and she’s a woman. They failed. In 2020, they put up Biden because his name was known, and he was tied to Obama. Plus, 10 million votes appeared.

In 2024, it came crashing down. The American public saw how the democrats lied to their face. They put Harris in because no other Dem politician would touch that election with a 10 foot pole.

Americans don’t want to be blatantly lied to, told their stupid and called garbage and deplorable. They don’t vote based on race and gender.

  34. Early_Criticism2628 on

Y’all need Jesus😂 maybe someday you’ll wake up but I highly doubt it unfortunately

  35. Trump won every swing state. More importantly, every swing state had higher turnout (Arizona is on the bubble, but ultimately didn’t decide).

TLDR; even if you have max turnout, Trump wins.

Stop looking at this as a credit to him. Start looking at it as a repudiation of the alternative. He is horrid? OK.

Somehow more people chose that over the alternative. Now comes blame the people, blame the podcasts, blame Elon etc crew.

Kamala was a candidate the Democrats shunned in 2020. So I guess the nation must be racist (I picked that over the litany of other excuses, but you get my point)?

She was a horrid candidate, peddling the wrong message, at the wrong time.

Here’s another bubble buster; that bussing stunt with immigrants, was it. Period. That was all it took. Trump should not thank anyone before Abbot and DeSantis. It called a gaslighting bluff that has existed for ages.

Even if he lost he won. No one is left on immigration from Bush, even the “left” is right of him. Just use your reason and consider that. George W. Bush is too liberal for America, including most liberals in America.

It’s a strange world we live in people.

  36. No shit. Because they think the electorate thinks like them, when very clearly they don’t:

  37. gengarvibes on

The working class do not have the time to stay politically engaged. The democrats do nothing to improve the livelihood of the working class. The dems did it to themselves.

  38. PMMEBITCOINPLZ on

So they won the few people who were paying attention. But not enough people paid attention. All righty then.

  39. ProdigyManlet on

Basically tells us what we know, dems lost the marketing war. The majority of people with an inkling of political interest or economic education would have voted for the dems.

Trump won based on populism and an effective media campaign. If dems want to win, they need a charismatic leader who can hold their own. They need to engage on all forms of media, so people can see them outside of a political setting and connect with them
