  1. Snoo_61544 on

Wow, this is one of the worst articles I ever read about supernovae

  2. This is a Type II (core collapse) supernova in PSO J061839.109+782129.10 at redshift 0.002979

First detected on November 15th at 2:00pm UTC

It has one public spectrum taken by HTC-2m/HFOSC by Hrishav Das on November 15th at 8:35pm UTC showing typical Hydrogen and Helium signatures

It is still rising so we’ll have more information in the coming days/weeks regarding its specific spectral type

Not sure why this article says 70 million light years away. It’s closer to 12 Mpc or 41 million light years

    Classification remarks from Das:

    > “We classify SN 2024abfl as a Type II SN based on a spectrum from HCT/HFOSC using Gr7 and Gr8. We get best matches using GELATO (Harutyunyan et al. 2008) with SN 1999gi, 3.8 days since the explosion. The spectrum reveals Halpha with a FWHM of around 6000 km/s and a hint of Hbeta + HeII complex at around 4500 Angstroms. Further follow-up is encouraged. “
