    ***TLDR***

The Chinese shopping app Temu, known for its low prices and viral marketing strategies, faces regulatory challenges in Southeast Asia. In October, Indonesia banned the app to protect local merchants, while Vietnam is considering similar actions, accusing Temu and Shein of operating without the necessary approvals. Temu’s low prices, driven by surplus manufacturing in China, have significantly disrupted local industries, leading to factory closures and job losses. Despite this pushback, Temu remains determined to expand in the region, focusing on its growing e-commerce market and increasing middle-class consumers. Local governments are tightening regulations to protect domestic businesses from the app’s aggressive strategies.

Literally just garbage. They sell exclusively items so cheap they fail at their basic function

It’s cheap because it’s garbage. The only stuff on temu, is garbage. I complain about amazon but even aliexpress flippers on amazon don’t ship obviously broken shit like I get from temu and no way for a refund other than disputing the payment. Only incredibly stupid impulsive people buy shit from the internet equivalent of dollar tree. Disclaimer: this is not an endorsement for amazon or dollar tree.

Yesterday, I was researching how to prevent ads from Temu and other Chinese apps from showing up in my searches. After about an hour of clicking through settings menus I gave up. I wish I could click one button and have all Chinese products removed from Amazon/Google shopping.

Temu will have a lot of difficulty in Vietnam. They’ve implemented a minimum and maximum order total to dodge import taxes which isn’t going to go over well with the authorities. They will have a very tough time competing against Shopee which is mostly drop shipped Chinese garbage anyways. They also don’t have cash on delivery which is still very much a big thing here, though it’s becoming less so.
