In Brief:
* Former Canadian ambassador to the U.S. Derek Burney is calling Canada a “laggard,” and says the country needs to do “major work” on its defence spending if it wants to be taken seriously on other issues with the United States.
* “If we expect to get any attention in Washington at all on anything, we’ve got to do major work on our defence capabilities,” Burney told CTV’s Question Period host Vassy Kapelos, in an interview airing Sunday.
* “I can’t put it too negatively, but we are laggard, we are irrelevant, and we make no contribution that I can think of that is meaningful anywhere in the world today,” he added.
* In an interview with Question Period earlier this month, former U.S. ambassador to Canada Kelly Craft also said “Canada can do better” when it comes to defence spending, especially when it comes to the Arctic and collective deterrence against adversarial countries, such as Russia and China.
So what? In WW1 we were there early. In WW2 we were there early and had the world’s 4th largest navy at the end of the war. Canada always has Europe’s back
He’s right.
The only party fully committed to spending 2% of GDP on defence:

We seem to be ok with giving away billions to foreign countries though.
Canada has become a joke on world stage in general. We really need to get it together.
We can hit our spending targets building stable permanent housing for military personnel and their families. While also supporting our veterans with larger pensions. We can beef up supports for our wounded soldiers and veterans. We can hit all our spending targets by supporting the actual existing and former membership of our military. Not new hardware from the states. Not more installations abroad. Not more bureaucratic liason departments. For that, we get an effective force of humans capable of making decisions knowing they are supported at home.
At least inclusive flags are getting more recognition according to social media
The Saudi Arabia syndrome. We rely on Daddy USA for protection, the only difference is, Saudi actually does have some regional sway on its neighbours…
This is reactionary crap. What exactly is pouring money into defence spending going to accomplish? Someone tell me. Sure, we haven’t been hitting the NATO numbers, but that’s true for almost every other member too, and there are no consequences. We are not in a position to be invaded, and we have bigger problems.
We have been priming Canadians to feel afraid of foreigners (look at the headlines on this sub) so that we can justify defence spending as a populist policy.
We are delusional is we think this is gonna make our lives any better.
I think, especially with younger generations, there was a thought that things were moving away from armed conflict, so what was the point? Then the old world reminded us, it’s because that is what it is.
Facts. He’s Spitting facts.
I’m not super military ra ra ra! I just want Canada to properly fund the military we got. Don’t need expansion.
It’s true. This is probably the one thing that I detest about the Trudeau family legacy. They hate the military except to use them as riot cops.
We should be making a constitutional change requiring 3% of GDP annually and without deficit financing.
Making the military off limits from political policy might also be a good idea. The current political correctness and witch hunts have enrolment at a new low.
Yeah, for more than 20 years now.
Cut that sentence in half and it’s still true
I mean that’s the Canadian way, going back decades. It isn’t anything new.
He’s 100% right. Ask anyone in the military they use extremely antiquated equipment. Basic needed equipment is 50+ years old in some cases. Our military is an embarrassment solely due to the lack of funding. The people in it are amazing, and I appreciate them all, but they deserve the best tools to do the jobs we all benefit from.
Let’s be clear here, this isn’t defence spending. When we talk about nato contributions what we are really talking about is giving money to American corporations. These corporations rip us off, and they make weapons helping people commit genocide all over the world. I’m tired of the American military dropping 80k plus bombs every year, especially since this makes them by far the biggest contributor to climate change.
Pushing some agenda, nothing to see move along
We should spend trillions like our neighbours while letting people rot without healthcare.
When was the last time Canada was a “relevant” armed power?
Canada should be embarrassed
Agreed. We should be spending way more on our air force and air defense.
Tell the US and their military arms manufacturers to STFU or Canada will form an alliance with China and allow them to set up military bases all along the border.
1. Specialize in threatening Russia’s North East Passage and denying the North West Passage to the PLAN. That means AIP submarines, larger and more garrisons in the Arctic. HVMs on snowmobiles. And icebreakers. Many more icebreakers. Build a serious naval base at Moosonee and at Iqualuit. LTA supply.
2. Build a Peacekeeping expeditionary force around Puller-class base vessels with a protective flotilla.
3. Pacific: if we don’t protect the Eastern Pacific the Americans will. SSNs supporting light patrol corvettes.
Maybe Canada has done the right thing. It looks like we are on the verge of a massive disruption of military technology and we won’t have invested tens of billions in gear.
The war in Ukraine has changed everything. Tanks appear to be obsolete. Maybe even warships. And by the time the F35 has worked out the bugs, it might not stand a chance against drones.
We’re laggards in a lot of other things too
Who the fuck cares. Canada has become lax , irrelevant and laggard with taking care of our own people
It’s embarrassing.
