Trumps former head of the Army and later his head of the Joint Chiefs of staff, Generally Milley, [recently warned of him as dangerous](https://thehill.com/policy/defense/4929487-trump-dangerous-milley-woodward/). Now his own Secretary of Defense just came out and is making similar warnings, warning that people should take Trump’s threats to use the military against Americans ‘seriously’. He warned that in 2020 Trump wanted to use active duty service members in Chicago and Portland and Seattle and against protestors.

“Because I lived through that, and I saw over the summer of 2020 where President Trump and those around him wanted to use the National Guard in various capacities in cities such as Chicago and Portland and Seattle,” and that Trump “wanted to bring in active duty military as well” against protesters.

This is similar to Milley saying they had to stop Trump from recalling retired officers to politically persecute them. Esper is concerned that if Trump gets into office next time he will surround himself with personal that will not stop him should he try similar acts again.

Esper notes that using the military against civilians would be unlawful, however this seems like weak protections now that the Supreme Court has granted immunity to Presidents, and broad roadblocks on prosecuting them otherwise. Are Trump’s Defense Secretary Esper and former Trump head of the Joint Chiefs of Staffs warnings cause for concern?

Trump’s rhetoric has been [getting darker and more extreme](https://www.politico.com/news/2024/10/12/trump-racist-rhetoric-immigrants-00183537), besides his racial hygiene rhetoric he is now talking about “the enemy within” and using military to address them:

    >“I think the bigger problem are the people from within,” Trump said. “We have some very bad people. We have some sick people, radical left lunatics.” “And I think it should be very easily handled by, if necessary, by National Guard or, if really necessary, by the military, because they can’t let that happen,”

Is this cause for concern? Why is this not affecting his support?
