    Read the article, key paragraph:

The report stated that an analysis of the Canadian institutions ranked in 2024 and 2025 shows that “the biggest drivers of its decline are its drops in teaching and research reputation.”
Baty noted that the federal government’s “drastic cut in the number of student visas” could also be causing the decline. In January, the government imposed limits on post-graduate work permits and announced a two-year cap on the number of international student applications it would approve.
“Alongside the existing downward pressure on ranking positions amid growing global competition comes the introduction of restrictions and caps on the number of international students, which is driving a significant drop in international student recruitment,” Baty said.

I have another theory. Perhaps let’s increase interventionist DEI policies which stifle merit, indulge in disinformation campaign driven protests which consume otherwise valuable time and maybe, just maybe, let in droves of unqualified “students” looking to use this as a backdoor to PR.

I am confident this will improve rankings.

/s just in case it was not obvious.

What they miss is that this is relative. Canadian universities aren’t necessarily declining in real terms, rather universities in Europe and Asia are improving faster than those in Canada (and other english speaking countries)

  3. Yea, thats what happens when universities only care about profit and just keep prioritizing international students for money. Canadian education has been falling for a while now. Thats why we are dead last in terms of innovation in G7.
