**explanation is simple: electric cars are on average newer, and newer cars are driven more than old cars**
**this phenomenon is known among conventional cars as well**
reasons are, among other things, that newer cars consume less fuel than old cars ,so people who drive a lot have an incentive to change cars often to save money on fuel and maintenance
those people sell these cars to people who drive them less, as for them higher fuel consumption doesn’t matter that much since they drive them less anyway.
off course, i’m talking about averages, some people have new cars and barely drive them, while others drive the shit out of their old cars, but on a country scale the effect is persistent ,especially in developed countries
judging by past trends, the number of km driven by EVs should increase by another 2 billion km this year, making up roughly 12 billion out of a total of 35 billion
so electric cars are nowadays 26.5 % of total car fleet in Norway but they account for almost 33% of total kilometers driven
diesel demand fell by 9.2% so far this year in Norway, and petrol demand fell by 4.2% ( petrol has already nearly halved since 2010, that’s why the decrease is slower )
Edit: source for my statements

If I could spend 100k on a new car every 3,4,5 years I would do it as well.
But my car is reliable as shit, so I wouldn’t buy a new one for many years. A nice 3 or 4 series Diesel would be amazing, especially since I have to drive a lot.
Almost everyone I know has electric cars now. The government is really pushing us to purchase electric cars instead of fossil cars, so it makes sense. It’s also cheaper. My next car will probably be an electric one as well.

I got fined for driving a petrol car in Stockholm
That is good and bad.
Car tyres are big source of microplastics and EVs are usually heavier than petrol cars. They also usually have better acceleration/performance. And that means faster tyre wear.
So they may help with climate change problems, but dangerous microplastics pollution gets worse.
This seems to relieve the long-term worries of batteries somewhat at least for Norway.
