  1. New York City’s Population is getting older and many of its residents are living longer. For many of them driving on the road themselves can be a stressful and difficult task. Here I looked into the relative amount of walking time to accessible subway stations accounting for bus routes throughout the day. This snapshot was taken on Wednesday October 2nd.

To view the interactive that lets you highlight areas based on region and walk time:

  2. This data is just the distances to stations with elevators (what “accessible” means). There is no data here about aging, or even particularly related to aging – this is far more relevant to people in wheelchairs.

Also, while the subway system IS very inadequate for those who can’t climb stairs, that is not the only part of NYC’s transit system. If you are disabled, you can register for Access-a-Ride, which is a paratransit service that will pick you up and drive you anywhere for the cost of a subway ride.

I could believe it’s getting older because people live longer.

NYC always has people leave for the suburbs and family life replaced by young new to career people.

Where’s the data for older? Is this since covid?

Cause one thing about living next to NYC. Nothing about that city is predictable.

Alphabet City was not a nice area 25 years ago. Meat packing district was different and MTV had just moved to times square to replace the peep shows
