From the linked article:
Sharp rise in vaping among young adult non-smokers
The number of adults in England to have started vaping despite never having been regular smokers has reached one million, scientists estimate.
This is a sharp increase on 2020, with disposable vapes having been available since 2021.
The rise is driven mostly by young adults – with about one out of every seven 18-24-year-olds who never regularly smoked now using e-cigarettes.
While some may have benefited by taking up vapes instead of traditional cigarettes – the trend could be worrying, experts say.
Lead researcher, Dr Sarah Jackson, at University College London (UCL), said the public-health impact of the “substantial rise” in vaping among people who have never regularly smoked depended on what they would otherwise be doing.
“It is likely that some would have smoked if vaping were not an available option,” she said.
“In this case, vaping is clearly less harmful.
“However, for those who would not have gone on to smoke, vaping regularly over a sustained period poses more risk than not vaping.”
Makes sense. They’re the ‘cool’ new smoking product, no one knows how damaging vaping truly is yet. Not to mention – the convenience of not having to actually light a cigarette or dealing with the nasty smell associated with them that screams OLD.
I recently visited England from Australia and was shocked at the prevalence of vaping and especially stores. It seemed like every 5th shop was selling something vape related.
Humans need protecting from themselves.
Such stupidity.
Vaping is an extremely hard habit to kick. I used to buy a vape, throw it away then go looking for it thirty minutes later. It was ridiculous. Nicotine is addictive as hell.
If it ain’t weed I ain’t in need.
Big Nicotine never loses.
I have friends and colleagues who do this because they think it’s less taboo than cigarette and they take a sip every 10 seconds. Then they complain of getting exhausted doing day to day tasks like walking to college.
Hell I’ve seen an 8yr old vaping at the children’s park
“BuT iT’s leSs bAd tHAn cigaReTTes!” – most vape users when you bring this up. Many people will say just about anything to justify their vice.
Vape pens are marketed as the less dangerous alternative to cigarettes and people who vape tend to claim that the dangers of vaping are hyped up or only apply to some other vape system that they themselves don’t use.
I think part of the problem is that culture has been so lax and accepting of it. There was a real taboo against cigarettes in the past 20 years and it correlated with a large decrease in cigarette usage.
There is a very interesting dichotomy between London and Paris which you can travel between rather quickly.
London has vaping everywhere as it has been taken up by the NHS and Cancer Research UK to promote harm reduction. With multitudes of studies and yearly reviews on the science.
Paris is smoking everywhere, excessively!! Like a lot.
Smoked for 15 years when I was recommended to vape instead. Been vaping for 3 years now, and I don’t get any of the complications I was getting with smoking, apart from the addiction obviously. I still miss it when I smell someone else smoking, nicotine is one hell of a drug
Because the youth are losing their self-preservation because they feel they have nothing to live for,
Might be repetitive but it’s what is happening
Vaping is just concentrated smoking.
I guess the world is that stressful for people.
