Garda Pádraig Scott has yet to return to work more than two-and a-half years on from the assault in Co Cavan.
The case remains open, but there are no leads and gardaí have been unable to trace the car the criminals used to flee the scene in Blacklion, it is understood.
The attack against Gda Scott, which left him with memory loss issues, took place while he was driving alone in a patrol car from Cavan town to Blacklion in the early hours of February 28, 2022.
He normally worked with a colleague when on night shifts.
One line of investigation has been whether those involved were “dropping off” contraband to Loughan House open prison. It is near the scene of the attack, which happened in a layby.​
It is not believed the attackers came from the jail, where inmates enjoy a less restricted regime.
