Tobacco products include cigarettes, pipes, cigars, cigarillos, water pipes (hookah, shisha), bidis, kretek, heated tobacco, and all forms of smokeless tobacco (oral and nasal). E-cigarettes and similar devices are excluded because they do not contain tobacco.
Not surprising, tobacco companies are heavily regulated, so they often target cultural and low income demographics. In poorer countries, cigarettes are often available in bulk and at lower prices, while in Western Europe, they really jack up the prices.
When I’ve traveled around Turkiye, Lebanon, and a few other places, it seemed like almost every adult male outside was smoking. Not sure if it’s tied to Islamic practices, but coffee and a smoke seem to be a common pairing.
What surprises me is the Czech Republic…
Any Czech folks care to share why smoking rates are so high?
I thought it would start to decrease along with Poland. In many countries, smokers have been priced out (which was kind of the government’s goal), and the culture has shifted completely.
So why is it so high in Czech Republic ?
Even in Ireland, a place with a pub on every corner, it’s become socially unacceptable to smoke in shared spaces.
And honestly while i hate vapes and I wish all vape shops would disappear from my city…. I cannot stress how much nicer is to smell something fruity rather than nasty tobacco.

Really? Under 30% in Russia? Really?
Also, France is really that high? I was thought that was just some silly stereotype.

Data came out today that excise taxes on tobacco are full 8% of the Bulgarian GDP.
Public finances might actually collapse if we quit smoking.

Disappointed there’s no data for Vatican City

Yeah, that is no surprise. Tobacco and Alcohol are extremely expensive in the UK. You move to mainland Europe and suddenly those things are considerably cheaper.

i don’t know how they have so much money at 15 to smoke , the packs are so expensive now it’s not even worth the dopamine rush , for example a pack of cigs in Romania goes to even 30 lei , which is roughly 5/6 euros

With how much it costs I’m surprised people can keep affording it.

Spain seems accurate but I think we smoke more than the French do, at least from what I saw being there.

In Sweden almost all of it is snus. Regular smokers are now around 5% if memory serves, one of (if not the lowest) level of smoking in Europe.

They had to limit the data to persons aged 15 years and older, because the huge constant tobacco smoke cloud that the younger kids emit would have skewed it. /s

This is incredibly sad.

If this is also counting snus then it has to be higher for Denmark and sweden

Misleading title. This data shows the rate of smoking people in the population. So a smoker might be smoking 1 or 100 cigarattes per day amounts to the same data in this graph. But if we consider the rate of #smoked cigarattes / population, Turkey is the highest all around the world :
Absolutely refuse to believe Germany is as low as that. Take a walk through any part of any city, and you will be in cigarette smoke 90% of the time.

Denmark also feels like that. You don’t see smokers that often, and smoking has become something you are pitied for. Very biased towards lower class. And not in the “cool bad boy” way, rather in the “alcoholic outside the convenience store” way.

Luxembourg should be at least 53% not 23%.
