  1. Anecdotal but i have been hearing a lot more belief this is happening naturally. While yes we aren’t helping but this is always going to happen even with out us.

Its frustrating to hear it but with more people believing that why would companies care about it unless governments step in.

Can surmise they can feel the shift in the political landscape (Using the BIG words), and since the next government won’t give a rats ass about it, they don’t need to pretend to care anymore.

Because who wants to take a shit in the punch bowl at the Q4 Christmas party? It’s all about bowing to fiduciary duty and fat profit incentives right up to the moment the flames wash over you. 🌍🔥🤑

They are retreating largely because it’s clear that any attempts to enforce the targets is laughable. Wealth is basically a shield from criminality at this stage and its abundantly clear there are a class of citizens on the planet to whom rules are just suggestions.

Oh you guys are talking borderline conspiratorial.

Nah, they’re walking back their targets because the deadlines are approaching. 2030 is a big one. It’s not just some far off date anymore. 2025 isn’t the future, it’s in a few months. Suddenly those lofty bold goals they set aren’t looking so good.

My thought, the guys at the top figure if they build the right compound, and hire the right security, they will save themselves. Either that or they figure out how to beat what’s coming.

  7. Depending on your level of cynicism, take your pick:

    – they knew they would never reach their climate targets and never intended to try
    – the climate targets were aspirational in nature, and once practical business concerns reared their head they had to take a backseat
    – they made their climate targets without fully appreciating the difficulty of actually achieving them

A lot of these climate goals were pushed on companies by well-meaning activists, or environmental consultants, or by ESG auditors… and I think it is definitely not overly cynical to think there was a deliberate element of “greenwashing” in it too. The kind of trendy targets that people centered on like “net-zero by 2050” should have been very clear to people that they were essentially pure wishful thinking rather than any meaningful goal to be worked towards.

It should be noted that our federal government’s goal is a 45% reduction in emissions from 2005 levels by 2030. By the time we get an election next year we maybe will be down 5%. If the Liberals somehow manage to win the next election that target is going to quietly disappear too; if they lose I’m sure the Liberals will claim they were just on the verge of succeeding.
