When times get tough, the tribe becomes very aware of who gets to be a member. This is true across not only all human societies but some animals too. There was a man who used to live with wild bears in the summer months every year for years. He was accepted by the group. One year, food was scarce, the bears were hungry, and they killed him because in this new situation, he wasn’t actually one of them. This is a true story. What’s happening in Europe and the US with the rise of nationalism is the same principle.
