The X-20 Dynasoar was an early precursor to the Space Shuttle. It was an interesting concept, and it has somewhat more new life in the Boeing X-37 and the Sierra Space Dream Chaser. There is a definite need for a LEO space plane capable of carrying crew and cargo to the ISS as well as future space stations in LEO.
