      Can we stop incarcerating opposition leaders so they can’t run for office? Hungary is trying to pull the same stunt as we speak.

      There is no way this will doom the 2027 perspective for Le Pen. Firstly if she is condemned, she would most likely get sursis, so no big deal. And if she get a harsher decision, she’d just appeal it and would drag it to enter the 2027 elections nonetheless.

      She just basically renamed her party from FN to RN.

      That being said: the Nazi collaborating party in VichyFrance was called RNP.

      Which is short for Rassemblement National Populaire not for Rassemblement National

      Unfortunately, no, French poliitics now work a little bit like US ones where there is no absolute truth but only alternate realities, where the final decision of a trial counts less than what has been said during court at TV and where this decision is only seen as politic opinions and not the work of hard working experts that have taken time looking at proofs.

      The defense of Marine Le Pen is laughable and demagogic but works with her electorate. She basically says that “the European interpretation of what should be the work of an MP assistant has won, and it attents to the freedom of the MP to do politics as he wishes at the service of French people”. This is so wrong (it’s not an interpretation, these people are paid for assisting European MPs and not work for a national party) but people will fall into it.

      Edit : ok, there is the “she also faces a possible five-year ban on running for public office that would prevent her from standing in the 2027 presidential election.” : true, but after 2027, there is 2032, and the party has other people to nominate in the meantime (and afterwards too: Marion Maréchal Le Pen, still young, will be a pain in French Politics for the next 50 years…). That’s a delay, but would serve Marine Le Pen victimization discourse at the end.
