Does having a science of progress actually help create more progress? Or is it just descriptive, where you can say that it is or isn’t happening? How is this different than, say, development economics? What would a successful “Progress Studies” movement look like? Could total factor productivity growth get back to what it was in the 50’s or 60’s (see here: https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Total-Factor-Productivity-Growth-Rate-21_fig4_277325937)? And if it can, is that because we studied how to make progress happen or because we got lucky with the next tech breakthrough (e.g. AI)?
