When you start understanding albania brother, you will also understand many mysteries of the world.

Usually gas stations in Albania are run by people with criminal past in many cases, so they lost everything, they are dead or just run out of business because there is no money anymore. Those seem like a lost location that it’s not even reasonable from the economic point of view to own a gas station, nobody lives there for sure and less people drive by. Even if I would personally drive by there I wouldn’t buy fuel from those stations if I don’t have to, most of which sell very low quality fuel.

  3. Usually its bcs a new road got constructed and not much movement on that part anymore.

Or they were build without respecting the rules and they got closed

  4. Mostly on older roads and passes where being the only station for miles made some economic sense, however with the construction of newer motorways that shorten time drastically the amount of drivers passing through would be minimal. It is also possible that many privately owned stations might have been also driven out of businesses by bigger franchises like Kastrati, Eida, Gega Oil who have the advantage of rigging prices through government connections or secure slightly ‘better’ prices through economies of scale.

Despite the construction boom, Albania is a painfully car centric country and only the last decade there has been some attempt to improve other modes of transportations due to tourism demand.

  5. The main building types in albania are: abandoned building’s, under construction building’s, under construction abandoned building’s, building’s from the time of Enver Hoxhës and shitty new buildings. You just encountered one of them. Usually those gas stations are abandoned either two ways. 1> They were build at a time when all the regions had an almost equal population so it made sense to have them there. But after the borders opened everybody changed location and some areas had no population to support more than 1 or 2 stations. 2> A new road was build that cuts access to costumers forcing them to close.

I’m visiting Albania soon. How common are gas stations on main roads and do you fill yourself or someone fill for you?
