They were demolished in the 60s and 70s, when the monastery was not yet known as a cultural treasure. There was no security. Due to the humid and rainy climate, restoration work will take many years.

In 3rd picture I was wondering why would people carve mathematical expressions on a monastery wall but then I realized Greek letters weren’t invented for mathematicians
I mean there is a sort of value of keeping the vandalize intact being a part of the history while trying to restore the paint, especially since it’s inscriptions and not graffiti per se. It will be interesting to see what was kept and not in a few years.
