this never crossed my mind, but i could definitely understand a kid assuming it. the way i’ve had it described to me when i was little—before i could understand vexillology or symbology—was that the red represented the sky, the blue represented the sea, and the easy way to remember the symbol’s orientation is that 동해물 comes first, then 백두산 second; going left to right, low swish first for the sea, high swish second for the mountain.
