Hopefully it will improve starting this November, HARRIS 2024!

It depends on the specific metrics used, but most sources agree that this trend has been ongoing since at least 2015, if not earlier.

Global Democratic backsliding on this scale is terrifying.

Crazy how shit is starting to hit the fan as soon as I became an adult 😔

Thanks Steven Harper. Fucking Canada over wasn’t enough for you, you had to go global

It’s not surprising, dictators have learned that all they have to do is ignore the protesters and keep doing what they want. There are no consequences as long as people aren’t starving most people accept a downward trend.

People mistakenly assumed that democracy was the convergence point of our societies.

I think a lot of this has to do with China, specifically China under Xi Jinping.

  9. Another effect of the global warming. Not intuitive at first. But yes.

We are controlled by social media algorithms that are owned by billionaires whose only purpose is to have more power. That’s our current reality and our societal decline can be traced back to that, we live in a post-truth world.

As long as the algorithms are not controlled, we will be fucked.

It all started around early November, 2016. The Russians were successful in fooling just enough weak-minded people to stay home from the voting booth in a certain North American democracy

  12. Well. Let’s change that.

    Magnetic bumper stickers.

    Blue christmas lights.

    Signs at crosswalks.

  13. Russians poisons social media for more than 10 years. They succeed in sowing discord and distrust almost everywhere. We never had a proper response to this, even today politicians think they can negotiate with Putin.

I WONDER WHAT HAPPENED 8 YEARS AGO THAT TIPPED THE SCALES WHAT COULD IT BE HMM

I get what it says now, but my immediate interpretation of this headline was that we made an offering to Democracy which was rejected, for the 8th year in a row.

russia, iran, venezuela, hungary.. basically anything that communism/socialism touches turns to shit

What I find more alarming is just how authoritarian left wing governments are becoming as well. Everyone looks at the right wing for ‘facism’, but rarely do accusations of authoritarian liberals come to light outside of conservative social media. Likely deliberately.

I don’t think democracy is going to work well with social media the way it is now. It is just too easy for people to meddle and sway mass opinions, as well as personal attacks to the individual. It’s not free thought, or even a meaningful vote when all you see is what the highest bidder puts on your feed.

Meanwhile Institute for Destroying Democracy reports exceptional results.

I’m starting to get the impression that the world and my life are going to look vastly different than they do now by the time I’m an elderly man.

I’m a little late to the party here but I really recommend reading Anne Applebaum’s new book, Autocracy, Inc. It paints a pretty bleak picture of how these illiberal and dictatorial governments have been working together to not only prop one another up (think Russia using NK missiles in Ukraine, or Venezuela using Chinese-made riot gear and surveillance equipment to quell protests), but to also spread their influence throughout the Western world. The scary thing is it’s clearly working.

  22. It will go back up eventually.

Humanity constantly has periods of democratic backsliding followed by rise of democratization

Looks like the guillotine industry is on the verge of a breakthrough. Stay tuned.
