Bold piece from the EU’s leading think-tank arguing that Brussels should play a greater role in the debate over geoengineering and investigate if solar radiation management could potentially reduce some of the worst consequences of climate change.

It’s definitely an interesting take on geoengineering. Balancing the potential benefits with the ethical implications is tricky, though. The idea of controlling the climate feels like a double-edged sword for sure.

The thing with geoengineering is the lack of incentive to change our behavior. Burying CO2 is literally an Ostrich effect.
The only solution to this climate conundrum is using less energy – we’ve basically seen the effects during the World-wide Covid lock down. Instead of this “geoengineering” we would do better when we’d investigate all our time and effort in making things more energy efficient. Although, we did manage to do just that a while back with LEDs but instead of using less energy we started covering entire buildings to show animations. Apparently we can’t help ourselves.
