They have done things like this for decades. They still do it on a regular basis to their Baltic, Northern- and Western European neighbors. Sure they could potentially cause harm with nuclear capable missiles from that distance, but it would mean the utter destruction of Russia itself. It’s utterly ridiculous political pinpricking.

It wouldn’t be particularly professional and probably overly proactive, but I’ve often wondered what would happen if a fighter jet were to theoretically fly over or across the path of those of these large, prop driven Russian bombers at full afterburner and at close to top speed.
I can’t imagine the sonic boom and the resultant wake turbulence would be pleasant.

Russia can’t seem to acknowledge the fact that they are no longer considered superpower like the Soviet era and are desperate to hold onto what fragment it still have.
By doing what the Soviets were doing it is deluding itself they are power to be reckoned.

Hmm, guess this means more military aid to Ukraine from Japan. Well played Putin, hope the sight seeing was worth it.

Russia provoking another country is stupid. Japan has a modern military. It is wise not test them.

U.S. does “Freedom of Navigation” warship cruises by US Navy in waters claimed by other countries.
U.S. does flights by US fighter jets in international air spaces claimed by other countries.
Assuming the Russian jets stayed in international air space around Japan, while this is stupid distraction given Russia is fighting a war 1,000 km away, this may be within their rights.

I think its likely Russia will have increase military presence on islands neighbouring Japan it allows China a back door to trade via that river between Russia and North Korea they’re widening for trade use.
It implies China still has its sight set on Taiwan as a goal, ie wants the option but the question is will it ever be ready.
So relations between Japan and Russia could deteriorate
Does Russia want an excuse to militarise those islands under their control that used to be Japanese.

Why doesn’t every country they fuck with fuck with them back?
Imagine 40 countries sending out planes 24-7 to fly along the Russian borders.
I am sure the Russians would get sick of it after a while…

Russia can barely protect its own borders from Ukraine, a single non NATO country.
The fact it thinks the odd aircraft flying near NATO territory will make us feel threatened is laughable.
