> The assistant treasurer, Stephen Jones, will announce on Wednesday that life insurers will be banned from using predictive genetic testing results in their underwriting assessments.
> Currently, insurers are exempt from discrimination law in relation to genetic testing and applicants for insurance are obliged to disclose if a genetic test has identified a predisposition for disease.
The movie GATTACA was way ahead of its time and that’s terrifying.

Well, that’s why it’s so expensive for healthy people to get insurance. No one wants to pay for the uninsurable.

Pretty sure they’ll try a workaround. We won’t charge more if you are found to have a genetic condition, but look how cheap our rates are (with the discount for being genetically perfect).

Equal access to insurance for all individuals, regardless of their health status, is essential.
Finally, an Australian ban I can support.
So, forcing them to take on more risk…how will this go exactly, will they a) increase everyone’s premia to cover the risk or b) roll over and take it?
Without sufficient enforcement and penalties, insurers will resort to pretext.
Excellent news! Glad they’ve done this!
This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/article/2024/sep/10/australia-insurance-company-discrimination-genetic-testing) reduced by 85%. (I’m a bot)
