Go after the parents. In the UK it could be based on NI number which you don’t get until you’re 16.Allowing kids on social media should be akin to buying them alcohol. Sales of smartphones should be 16 and over and the parents need to ensure other digital devices are firewalled. Like I said, won’t be 100% effective but we are talking a general societal benefit here

A lot of children shouldn’t be using the internet unsupervised at least till they’re 15 years old, I wouldn’t even let my kids on social media. There are a lot of people even on reddit, that have really bad issues and will take advantage of them really quick when given the opportunity. I don’t know how many complaints I’ve given to law enforcement in the last 8 years because “this nice guy” just wanted to talk to one of my female family members that were too young to talk with them.

Might be a good idea, depending on how it’s regulated, but can we also stop people sharing sixty pictures of their kids every damn day? Okay, my main reason is that it’s bloody annoying, but it also seems unfair for kids to have their lives shared online when they’re not even allowed on the platforms it’s shared on.

I’m not normally the type to want curtail rights, but this is just plain common sense. Kids have no place in public conversations and it’s sick to expose a young mind to the rampant sexualities toon and propagandizing that goes on in social media. there’s for sure no protecting them from it entirely, but society’s experiment with hyper permissive attitudes towards kids needs to end.

Australian here, this is infuriating because it is nothing but a ploy from the current government to keep voters. They are only passing this because the opposition said theyd do it if they win the next election. The way this would go about is also concerning, data breeches are so common in Australia that I personally would not trust using something like my ID to verify my age for social media.
Id rather my government focus on banning gambling ads, Australians lose $1600 a year on average from gambling (over half of what Americans lose), poker machines are quite literally everywhere, gambling ads run constantly on every site and the government refuses to do anything to combat the very obvious gambling problem this country has. Hell [they were running gambling ads on childrens media](https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/article/2024/sep/05/grattan-institute-gambling-harm-report-australia-ad-ban) until very recently. This is not even mentioning the cost of living crisis that politicians refuse to address bc a good chunk of them are investors.
While its a good idea, the timing of this is fucking horrendous and theres a reason Aussies are peeved over this.

Not really a fan of this. The government shouldn’t be parenting people’s kids. It should be the parents responsibility to monitor their kids social media usage, not the government
