‘Don’t look away’
>”Don’t look away. Choose color against bullying and join STIP IT.” This year, this message draws attention to the bystander effect. Bystanders can have a major impact in preventing further bullying behavior and especially the negative consequences for the person experiencing the bullying behavior.
>What can you do?
>Responding to bullying behavior as a bystander is not always easy. That is why Sabine Coppens of the Flemish Network Choose Color against Bullying gives a number of tips.
>Support the person who is being bullied. This can be done in a group, but also personally. For example, send a (sweet) message to ask how things are going.
>Guide the person being bullied away from the situation. Start talking about a different topic or suggest doing something else.
>Offer the person being bullied company. Show that they are not alone by being present both physically and online.
>Address the bullying behavior in a way that does not come across as aggressive. For example, say that you do not agree.
>Get help if you would endanger yourself by intervening. Talk about it with someone you trust and who can work with you to figure out how you can help.
