“Highway flight operations are part of the US military’s focus on Agile Combat Employment efforts.” Pilots landing to complete ACE qualifications. Got it.

OOO OOO! I saw an f-35 today! That’s not relevant to this conversation but it went Raaaaar and it it swooshed by and it was very cool!

  3. If memory serves correct, they don’t fare well landing in a forest.

Good thing it didn’t try landing on an un-finish highway. Boy am I hilarious.

**Title**: “American F-35 stealth fighters landed on a highway in Europe for the first time in training with one of NATO’s newest allies”

**Image caption**: “American F-35 stealth fighters landed on a highway in Europe for the first time in training with one of NATO’s newest allies”

**First 2 bullet points**: “The US landed two F-35 Lightning II fighter jets on a highway in Europe for the first time. The training occurred in Finland, one of NATO’s newest members.”

**First sentence of article**: “The US Air Force landed two of its fifth-generation F-35 Lightning II stealth fighters on a highway in Europe for the first time ever this week.”

**Second sentence of article**: “US Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa announced the successful landing on Wednesday, writing that two F-35s executed a landing on a highway in Finland”

Sorry I’m not really clear on what happened could ya repeat it once more please?

  6. I got a little excited and then saw “Airforce”. One of my old Marine units transitioned into F35’s.

This is being made out to be some kind of super brand new tactic that the United States is learning from the Europeans but the article is ignoring the entirety of the Cold war where this happened a lot pretty regularly in places like the German Autobahn.

In Sweden there are dedicated straight and wider stretches of roads (not highways, but smaller roads) that are called “flygrakor” (basically “flight straights”). These are spread out across the country, and AFAIK the purpose is to provide landing strips for military aircraft.

They are also popular for testing the top speed of your car.

*Swedish Gripen fighter showing the F-35 how it’s done*. “Like this….”

If it has to take off from that same highway it would literally destroy it

I feel like our military must be disappointed and super stoked at the same time about the times we’re living in right now. We’re being presented with the opportunity to project our strengths and capabilities with our allies but out of a necessity to deter an ever increasing danger of the rise of fascist ideology around the globe and the caveat of revealing more of the power we have to wield in the case of defending freedom and democracy.

  12. A little off topic but I love that one of the aims of Russia’s aggression in Ukraine was opposing NATO expansion, which resulted in…NATO expansion. And now, we rub their noses in it with F-35s in a country that shares a border
