Brazil’s top court ordered the immediate suspension of X in the country after its billionaire owner Elon Musk defied orders to name a legal representative for the social network in Latin America’s largest nation.

The banning of the platform formerly known as Twitter caps a months-long feud between Musk and Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who is spearheading efforts to combat fake news and hate speech that he says are harming Brazil’s democracy.

In 2 weeks everyone in Brazil will have forgotten the shitshow that is Twitter even exists.

    3. TL:DR for this whole thing:

For clarity, this is the apex of a fairly long running legal battle. The Brazilian supreme court has fined twitter something to the tune of 20 million BRL for failing to comply with suspension orders of terrorists a year or two ago, after Brazil’s own capitol invasion. Twitter didn’t comply with those because of Musk’s usual “free speech absolutism as long as it’s speech he agrees with” policy.

The thing that’s causing the ban is a bit different, all social media platforms are now required by Brazilian law to have a representative entity in Brazil so they can be regulated appropriately, and twitter has refused to do so because of Musk’s feud with the supreme court, now they’ll cry it’s censorship or some other such nonsense, but it’s just plain old intentional failure to follow the law.

Edit: fixed the numbers, I was going from memory and my memory’s bad lol

    4. Anyone caught using a VPN to access it will be fined R$50.000 daily.

As a Brazilian, I’m sad for a few reasons* but this is for the best.

*I hate Elon as much as everyone else, but Twitter was (before him) and still is the best and only social media where you can learn about an international event in REAL time. An olympian got a medal? 1 minute later you have 10.000 tweets about it.

Twitter was the place where I could be mutual and follow the daily lives of common people from other countries. This is incredibly hard to do on other socials.

Twitter is the social media that acts as a public diary where people can follow you and read your thoughts daily. There is currently no other social media that does this as well (uh there’s Bluesky and Threads I guess)

There are many international individuals that I follow on Twitter that simply do not post their “diary” on other social media. It’s the little things you know. It kinda feels like being fired and missing your workmates.

    5. Elon just got the full Brazilian wax treatment—painful and no-nonsense.

Good. As a Brazilian laywer, I don’t care too much about politics, but I DO care about the law.

It has been like this since forever, and not only for social medias, but for EVERY company: if you want to do business in Brazil, you must have a legal representative in the country. You must comply with the Brazilian legal framework (no matter what “idea” you have about the rights or responsabilities applicable to you in your home country).

It is like this all around the world. And I’m glad that, in this specific case, it is like this here too.

Let Musk have the right to a fair trial, of course. But as of now, X is NOT in compliance with a Supreme Court Order, in violation of corporate law. He is openly and willingly challenging not only Brazil’s legitimate legal institutions, but the country itself. Let him eat cake until the final decision of the courts.

Elon can fix this by using his excellent negotiating skills…you know? like telling the Brazilian government to “go fuck themselves”

Wonder how hard it is to learn Portuguese if I already know shitty Spanish. Brazil looking pretty good rn…

Elon Musk and Brazil deserve to make each other’s lives hell. Go nuts.

    10. Aaaaah, so this is why people are posting goodbye memes to Brazilian Miku :O

    11. Please Please let some brazillian dude create a competitor to Twitter and encourgae the rest of the world to transition to Brazwiltter. Leave behind that clusterfuck of X

    12. It sucks that it took this long for x to actually stand up to a government telling them to take down content. Both India and Turkey have done this in the past and x ultimately caved to them.

    13. There is a Brazilian game dev who is pretty bummed about this because Twitter was what got them known and out there. Musk is such a piece of shit.

Wow who would have thought the woke evil liberals have invaded the Brazilian courts. – Elon Musk probably.

    15. If you are interested in actually finding out what’s going on here. Don’t rely on Reddit comments to tell you. Go Google..

The problem here is both sides are awful.

Instead of asking for some reasonable level of moderation, brazil basically want a go to stooge who automatically takes down anything the regime doesn’t agree with.

He named a lot of twitter representatives in turkey when erdogan requested the same. Elon just loves dictator wannabe losers.

    18. StatusCount7032 on

Probably the best thing a government has done for its people.

    19. Use ONEG8 instead. Has lots of features and is still developing and getting better. Better than mastodon imo
